Monsters are Coming! changes
The city keeps moving, and so do we.
With this new update, we wanted to focus on three things: giving you new toys to break the game with, adding more long-term challenges for the most dedicated players, and making the game easier to understand as its systems keep growing.
Since launch, we’ve seen players push Monsters Are Coming! further than expected, especially with Endless Mode and the leaderboards. Some of you are already reaching the point where “surviving” is no longer enough: you want harder runs, stranger builds, bigger scores, and new ways to prove that your city can endure anything.
So this patch is all about that.
We’re adding a new Hero, a new Townhall, Weekly Challenges, stackable Challenges, new difficulty modifiers, and a brand-new Codex to help clarify the many keywords and systems that now shape your runs.
And because every new system creates new possibilities, we’re also adjusting balance, especially around Ice builds and score calculation, to make sure the road ahead stays dangerous, competitive, and interesting.
Let’s get into it.
New Content
New Hero: The Joker
This new hero is a Trickster and will never let you now his next move… Start the game with a random weapon, and find his “Joker’s tricks” in chests to switch your equipped weapons for new ones or to gain a random stat upgrade, and embrace his madness to get stronger! Steam post image
New Townhall: The X-Fortress
This new X-iting Townhall loves when everything is well organized. Adjacence buildings at the center will affect all the city, and four special tower slots allow towers that are placed on it to get their effect three times. Follow the rules of the Fortress and pick the right buildings to make it shine. Steam post image
Challenges
For people tired of winning in Nightmare, a weekly challenge has been added to the game! Each week, when the leaderboard is refreshed, a new set of challenges, map, Hero and Townhall will be accessible. The score realised in it is isolated from the global Leaderboard to keep track of the Weekly challengers competition. New challenges will be added in future updates to give more variety and add spice in your games.
Multiple challenges can now be activated at the same time
Added new challenges to spice up your games
Inflation: makes the prices in shops grow each shelter (3 levels)
Small Hangar: limit the Rocks stock (3 levels)
Rage: make the monsters deal more damage to the City (3 levels)
Erosion: each reroll also costs a certain pourcentage of the City’s HP (3 levels)
Fracture: Buildings have life and can be temporarily destroyed (1 level)
Challenges now impact your final score. The trickier it is, the more it will make grow your score
Codex
We have heard your struggle to understand the keywords of the game. To help clarify them, we have added a new codex menu, accessible from pause menu and progression menu, where we will list and explain the different words and unclear elements of the game.
These codex entries are also accessible in shop and level up when hovering a building. We hope it will help you in your build creations and are eager to hear your feedbacks about it!
Balancing
Added a new condition for Ice family’s primary effect activation :
The chance to trigger the ice statue transformation can only apply on enemies under 30% of their max life. This family was ignoring completely the enemies life scaling, which was making the endless mode trivial with a great attack speed.
In compensation, frostbite’s stack impact on chances to transform enemies into statues has been increased from 0.35% per stack to 0.7%. Reach the condition will encourage to maintain a good damage scaling, then the effect will trigger more easily.
Score: the impact of the difficulty has been largely reinforced in score calculation. It now multiply your total score instead of adding a pourcentage bonus, with Normal giving x1 and Nightmare giving x1.5
Bug fixes
Fixed an issue where the Boss Slayer achievement could unlock before defeating 5 bosses.
Fixed an issue that prevented players from earning gold.
Fixed multiple navigation and input issues.
Fixed several progression unlock issues.
Fixed multiple unreachable bonuses and monsters during runs.
Various minor bug fixes and improvements.
Performance optimizations.
As always, we’ll be watching your feedback closely. We’re especially curious to see what combinations you create with the new Challenge system, how far you push the Weekly Leaderboards, and how quickly someone finds a completely unreasonable way to exploit the Joker.
Thank you again for playing, testing, reporting, theorycrafting, and helping us improve the game update after update.
The monsters are still coming.
So keep the city moving.
Glory to the Ark!
