Guess The New Tool:

Can you guess this never before seen tool by silhouette?

Steam post image

That’s right, it’s the Eyedropper Tool!

How does it work?

You can select a color within a line of sight of the tool, then the fill bucket tool will now use that color.

So of course, this means that the eyedropper tool doesn’t do anything on its own, since there needs to be another tool.

That doesn’t mean it’s not AWESOME though. It’s opened the door for a ton of line of sight based puzzles. They’re super fun and we can’t wait for you to see them!! ;)

Here's a little sneak peek:

Sprucing Things Up

We’ve put a great deal of effort into making the game look a lot better, which includes…

NEW AWESOME ANIMATIONS BABY

Such as this flashy new commit animation:

Or this juicy grinding animation:

Or what about this trippy new overlap animation!

Also, we’ve stepped up our level art game a lot - check out these awesome redesigns of old levels:

Also you may have noticed the new sprite for Miss Paint!

… that one’s a work in progress, we’re still roughing out some edges, but it’s almost done!

SO WHAT THE DARN IS TAKING SO LONG?!

Making the game, but we should probably give an update on how that’s going.

Bad news first:

Remember how we said that we “tentatively plan to release the game in 2026”? Well, that’s looking pretty tentative. Most likely the 2026 release date isn’t going to happen.

Good news second:

Progress is going swimmingly! Since some of us are in school and have jobs and lives, progress has always been on and off with this project. But since we’re getting close to actually finishing this darn thing, progress has been picking up A LOT.

We’re happy to say that we have finished the first section of the game, which is comprised of 88 levels.

So to answer the question “what the darn is taking so long?!” We plan for this game to have a lot of content. Like, a LOT. We have designed over 200 puzzles so far.

Of course, designing the level is just half the battle, the levels need art as well. How things work on this project is that a level designer (usually Stevo) makes a rough design for a level, then an artist redraws it to make it look not boring.

Here’s an example (that’s also a brand new never before seen level!)

We’ve completed the art for about half of the levels that we currently have made, a majority of which was done in the last two months thanks to us improving our workflow. Hooray!

We still have to put together some major sections, then playtest, localize, fix bugs, etc. As it turns out, that’s a lot of stuff!

But speaking of…

Playtesting?

We’ve started playtesting an alpha version of the game! We’re keeping playtesting internal for the moment, but be ready for a public playtesting call in our discord in the near future!

Q&A TIME!!!!

This time we’ve been provided questions by our wonderful discord! Check it out so you don’t miss your chance to be featured on the next Q&A!

Q: Will there be a Mr. Paint? From Blizito A: Still no.

Q: Will the demo receive any more updates? From Metalluigi1232 A: Yes! We plan to at some point update the demo to be more in line with what’s gonna be in the full game. (And by “update” we of course mean replace the whole thing with a demo made from the new build of the game)

Q: How hard will Miss Paint be? From Anonymous

A: The game will probably be similar in difficulty to games like Baba Is You. Kind of medium difficulty for puzzle games hopefully. Compared to the current demo we’ve been working to make the main path easier and optional content much harder.

Q: Will there be a hint system in game? From Mint Tempest A: Maybe, we have considered adding a hint system, but we don’t have anything properly designed or implemented yet.

Q : Will there be an in-game level editor?

From B0X_Gaming A

Yep !

Here’s what it might look like

We’ve actually been using the editor to create most of the puzzles, but it didn’t look nice like this yet.

Q: Can I have Miss Paint’s Autograph? From “Beyoncé” A: Sure.

Q: What were your main inspirations when designing Miss Paint? From TheRustCreator A: So funnily enough, we actually got the idea from trying to draw concept art on a voice call. Someone was sharing their screen using a painting program to draw ideas, and then we thought “what if the painting program IS the game?” And we eventually came up with the idea for Miss Paint!

Some mechanics were heavily inspired by other games, the idea to collect green to win came from early scratch games where certain colors were often used to do the same thing. Scratch has a function for detecting if a character is touching a certain color, so a lot of games made in scratch revolve around different colors doing different things. This was reflected in how the mechanics work in Miss Paint.

MS Paint was a major inspiration for the title obviously, but it also inspired Miss Paint’s character design! Our sprite artist HackaKat used the MS Paint logo

Q: Do you have any tips/tricks for coming up with ideas for games or anything in general? From Hoy!!!

A: We all come from a Mario Maker background, and Mario Maker is a level editor. You don’t get much agency in your art direction or your narrative, Mario Maker simply doesn’t have those options. The best levels are the ones that are fun to play. So, we became very “mechanics first.” We try to think of ideas that make our game more interesting mechanically, then we build aesthetics and story around that.

The hardest part about making games, or making anything really, is starting.

We also believe in always sharing ideas no matter how ridiculous they are. A lot of our best ideas for Miss Paint came from someone suggesting an idea they knew wouldn’t really work, and then the rest of the team taking the good parts of the idea and expanding upon them.

Q: Will you be inventing new colors for Miss Paint? From TerriblyTrouble

A: We've been working hard on creating a new color between red and yellow, we’re between naming it Yellowred or maybe Glungle.

Q: Are there any silly bugs so funny you wanted to include anyway? From WanderingPixel A: We’ve unfortunately not encountered any bugs we could actually keep, but we have encountered some bugs that were fun to mess around with. One of the funnier ones is that colorpicking gray currently makes tools indistinguishable from each other.

Another we discovered more recently was a way to arbitrarily teleport selections anywhere through abusing the undo system. It’s a bit too easy to execute to reasonably keep, which has been common for a lot of the fun bugs unfortunately.

Q: What was before Miss Paint? How was Twice Twice formed? From Pijinguy A: We mostly come from the Mario Maker Troll level community, so we knew each other before we started developing games. In fact, the inspiration for our name comes from Symplectic's famous troll level, "Larl does everything Twice Twice". Troll levels taught us quite a lot about puzzle design and game design in general, so it gave us a pretty significant headstart when migrating to game development.

Twice Twice as a team got its start late 2023, when we came together to work on a “two week” project known as toast game. We spent around 6 months on it and it never really got very far, so we decided to join the Bigmode game jam 2023 instead! That’s when we made Miss Paint. It didn’t win anything, but we still thought the game was pretty cool so we eventually decided to make it into a full game.

Q: Where am I? From Anonymous

A: This is the Q&A.

Q: What’s next after Miss Paint? Any plans for an expansion, dlc, sequel, or a new game? From Affogia and sog A: All of our energy is being focused on making Miss Paint the best game it can possibly be, but we do have loose plans for the future. Nothing is set in stone yet, but Miss Paint definitely isn't the last project we will work on together.

Q: Will there be more cyan? I love Cyan. From Pol_Ber A: We love Cyan too, so yes.

That’s all the questions we have time for. Apologies if we didn’t get to your question this time around, we tried our best to answer all the questions we could give interesting answers to. If you still have a burning question you’re dying to ask us, come and ask away in our discord! Thanks for all the questions!
