And introduction, a new look and some progress

I decided I wanted to try and use this space to give monthly (yeah, let's shoot for monthly) updates on how I'm doing with Life Altered.

What changed

0 fixes2 additions0 changes0 removals
  • Gameplay
  • UI and audio
addedI love roguelike deckbuilders and after playing Slay the Spire for 2000+ hours (and counting), as a player I had a tough time trying to find a game that captures the same zen-like feeling I have when playing StS, but with new mechanics. So I decided I'd try my hand it. What makes Life Altered different from StS? They key things are: Playing with dice instead of cards (more on that in a later post), having three characters per run instead of one and multiple stackable upgrades for every die you play.
addedI wasn't happy with my UI (actually, I'm never happy with my UI) and overall looks of the game. This is still a work-in-progress and the hardest part of making a game for me, but most of march was devoted to improving the game visually: New UI, new animations, new icons, new fonts. And you know what? For the first time, I kinda like how the game looks. Let's see if it sticks.

I decided I wanted to try and use this space to give monthly (yeah, let's shoot for monthly) updates on how I'm doing with Life Altered.

But first, an introduction:

Hi, I'm Senescent Leaf, an indie game dev from Germany, making his first (commercial) game. My intention behind Life Altered is two-fold:

  1. I love roguelike deckbuilders and after playing Slay the Spire for 2000+ hours (and counting), as a player I had a tough time trying to find a game that captures the same zen-like feeling I have when playing StS, but with new mechanics. So I decided I'd try my hand it. What makes Life Altered different from StS? They key things are: Playing with dice instead of cards (more on that in a later post), having three characters per run instead of one and multiple stackable upgrades for every die you play.

  2. I also love biology and the weird and astonishing things that exist in nature after a couple billion years of evolution. This is a result of me studying biology in my youth and a fascination that never left me. So with Life Altered, I want to share that feeling. Every dice can hold up to six real-life creatures. Maul your enemies with the honey badger, lay your eggs in enemies with the tarantula hawk or cause severe pain with the stinging tree.

Okay, on to the actual update

I wasn't happy with my UI (actually, I'm never happy with my UI) and overall looks of the game. This is still a work-in-progress and the hardest part of making a game for me, but most of march was devoted to improving the game visually: New UI, new animations, new icons, new fonts. And you know what? For the first time, I kinda like how the game looks. Let's see if it sticks.

Here's the before:

(you don't want to see the before before...)

And the after:

Anyways, if anything, this is a nice way to document my progress on the game.
