Honey, I Joined a Cult changes
Hi everyone,
We’ve been reading through the forums and the recent comments, and it’s clear that many of you are wondering what’s going on with Honey, I Joined a Cult. Specifically, we’ve seen the word "abandoned" pop up quite a bit. We wanted to step in, clear the air, and give you an honest update on where things stand.
The Journey Since 2017
First off, we want to reassure you: we haven’t abandoned the game. HIJAC was our first "baby." We started this journey back in 2017, and at the time, we were learning everything from scratch—literally learning to code, figuring out everything about game development, and building a community all at once.
It was a massive undertaking that took years of blood, sweat, and tears to move through Early Access and finally into a 1.0 release. We are incredibly proud of what the game became, and we haven't forgotten the support you gave us to get it there.
The Reality of a Two-Person Team
As many of you know, we are a tiny team of just two developers. While we have a huge amount of affection for HIJAC, the reality of being a two-man band is that we can really only "spin one plate" at a time.
For the past while, our focus has been entirely on our new project, Space Scum. We did previously have some external help brought in specifically to keep things moving on HIJAC, but for various reasons, that arrangement didn't quite work out as we’d hoped. That left us in a position where we had to make a choice: do two things poorly, or focus on one thing properly.
What Happens Next?
Because we want to give Space Scum the best possible launch, it is currently taking up all of our development time. However, that doesn't mean the book is closed on HIJAC.
Our plan is to return to HIJAC in 2026, once Space Scum has been released. We know it’s frustrating to wait, and we know it’s been quiet on this page for a long time. We aren’t trying to be defensive or dismissive of your concerns—we genuinely appreciate that people still care enough about the game to ask for updates. We’ve simply had to prioritise the survival and growth of our little studio.
Thank you for sticking with us, for the feedback, and for the patience. We’ll be back to check in as soon as we can.
Cheers,
Simon & Ed
