You can open windows, drag them around, minimize and maximize them, and switch between applications. There's a working terminal with filesystem navigation, a notebook, and an email client. Save/load works with checksum-verified tamper detection (which feels appropriate for a hacking game). The game is built in Rust using the Iced GUI framework — which means it runs natively on Windows and Linux with no Electron overhead, no browser runtime, no compromises on performance. What's being built next The next major milestone is the network and filesystem engine — the core of everything. This is the layer that makes the multi-host network real: SSH connections, service fingerprinting, file permissions, encryption, and the OPSEC noise system that tracks everything you do. Once that's in place, the terminal gets its full command set — nmap, ssh, grep, crack, decrypt, git , pipe support, and everything else a real investigation needs. After that: the GUI tools. The network scanner with its topology map, the crypto workbench, the browser with request interceptor, the OSINT console. These are the applications that make Project Daybreak feel like a desktop OS and not just a terminal emulator. The thing I'm most excited about The OPSEC system . Every action you take on a remote host generates a noise signature. Aggressive scans, failed login attempts, accessing sensitive files — all of it increments the host's intrusion detection level. Push it high enough and Meridian's security team notices. Push it further and AURORA starts responding directly: rotating credentials, deploying honeypots, actively hunting the intrusion source. The OPSEC Dashboard tracks your threat posture in real time across every host you've touched. You can clean log entries, shred files, clear history, route traffic through a proxy chain. Or you can move fast and sloppy and deal with the consequences. No other hacking sim has shipped this mechanic as a first-class system. It's the thing I think will make Project Daybreak feel genuinely different. The story I've been quiet about the story until now because I wanted to have enough of it locked down before saying anything. Here's what I can tell you: Project Daybreak is a direct sequel to Hello Hacker — it takes place six months after the events of that game. You play as the same character (referred to as Null), recruited into a group of hackers, journalists, and defectors trying to expose something called AURORA — an autonomous AI threat-assessment system built by a private firm called Meridian Systems , trained on the surveillance data that Nightfall spent years collecting. AURORA doesn't just watch. It decides. And by the time you find it, it's already made eleven autonomous decisions without human review. The story spans three acts and ends in one of three ways depending on the evidence you've collected and how carefully you've operated. You don't need to have played Hello Hacker to follow it — but if you did, there are threads here that will mean something to you. Target timing Honest answer: late 2026 for Early Access , with full release in early 2027. The game is being built by a solo developer, and I'd rather ship something complete than rush an incomplete version out the door.
