We’ve spent the last couple of months slowly playtesting Grimroll with a closed group of local game developers, we’ve also been tirelessly implementing the feedback we’ve gotten so far and we’re extremely excited to share that development on the game is going full steam ahead. In keeping with these great pushes forward we've made with the game, we first created new Key Art for Grimroll, giving the spotlight to some of our characters and the oppressive woods they find themselves in.
A lot of the work in the last couple of months has been focused on the art direction and nailing what we wanted the game to look like. In this short update we'll go over some new art stuff and how they came to be, so let's start.
We’ve explored the Croatian Naïve art movement and decided to take a lot of inspiration from it for our own art direction. It's an art movement that's often overlooked in modern media but for our Ui heavy game it was perfect, fitting the theme of the game so beautifully as well. We couldn't wait to start playing around with it and we first wanted to dip our toes into character design using this art style and below you can see some of the enemies we've created so far.
After that, of course, it was time to tackle environmental design. Have a gander at a basic concept of an area for the game we're working on. The lack of outlines in the environment was tricky to get used to, but we think it's great, adding to the strange Fairy tale feeling of the game overall. As kids, most of our parents and grandparents read stories to us that were illustrated in the very same style, it's quite surreal that we now have the opportunity to present this style in a new light.
