Progress update

Hi Everyone, We’re hard at work on the next update for Duke Grabowski. Upgrading the game to a much newer version of the Unity engine has turned out to be a pretty big challenge.

changedUpgrading the game to a much newer version of the Unity engine has turned out to be a pretty big challenge. More than 10 years of engine changes means a lot of things broke along the way—but we’re making steady progress.
changedThe game now finally runs from start to finish again, but there’s still plenty of small issues to fix. Some animations are broken, certain texts and voice lines aren’t playing correctly, and the intro/outro videos are currently not working.
fixedFixed multiple cases where on-screen text didn’t fully match the voiceovers, as well as a few missing subtitles
fixedFixed aspect ratio issues and incorrect text shadow offsets in subtitles
changedStarting with this update, the game will support Steam Cloud save syncing. The current version of the game saves its data to "Windows Registry", which was common for Unity games of that era. We’ve changed this so progress is now saved to regular files, allowing Steam to sync saves across devices.
changedBecause of this change, existing save progress will not carry over when updating. To avoid disrupting players who are currently playing, we’ll provide a beta branch containing the previous version of the game so you can finish your playthrough there.

Hi Everyone,

We’re hard at work on the next update for Duke Grabowski.

Upgrading the game to a much newer version of the Unity engine has turned out to be a pretty big challenge. More than 10 years of engine changes means a lot of things broke along the way—but we’re making steady progress.

The game now finally runs from start to finish again, but there’s still plenty of small issues to fix. Some animations are broken, certain texts and voice lines aren’t playing correctly, and the intro/outro videos are currently not working.

This next update, while containing a lot of changes under the hood, will be a modest change from a player's standpoint, and will serve as a starting point for further updates.

The most notable changes we're planning for the next update are:

  • Restoring MacOS support - the game will run natively on modern Intel and Apple silicon Macs

  • Cloud save syncing

  • Fixed multiple cases where on-screen text didn’t fully match the voiceovers, as well as a few missing subtitles

  • Fixed aspect ratio issues and incorrect text shadow offsets in subtitles

Starting with this update, the game will support Steam Cloud save syncing. The current version of the game saves its data to "Windows Registry", which was common for Unity games of that era. We’ve changed this so progress is now saved to regular files, allowing Steam to sync saves across devices.

Because of this change, existing save progress will not carry over when updating. To avoid disrupting players who are currently playing, we’ll provide a beta branch containing the previous version of the game so you can finish your playthrough there.

That's it for now! We're aiming to have this update live by the end of February, after which we’ll move on to additional improvements, as mentioned in the previous post.
