Salute DomeRunners!

Today we're excited to finally introduce our largest update to the demo yet: Tournament Mode! Before we dive deep into Tournament Mode's very work-in-progress guts, let's take a look at this overview video:

Tournament Mode

Overview

Tournament Mode introduces a procedurally generated roguelike tournament with different maps, mutators, modifiers, random champions, and mini quests. Domerunners can unlock new sub-classes, use relics, gamble, bet, and rise up in the tournament to become the champion of the Dome.

Ludus/Sub-class Selection

One of the first things you'll choose before starting a new tournament is your gladiators'Ludus, or as plebeians might call it, Sub-Class. Each gladiator now has three Ludus options that drastically changes the way you can create builds with them. For example, the Heavy Gunner Ludus of Spartacus lets you create a gambling build that gets more and more powerful as you do so. See, mom?! I told you my gambling addiction wasn't useless!

The Quarters

Between fights, you'll get to prepare using various means in the quarters. Let's take a look at what you can do:

  • Go to the Quartermaster and use your hard-earned gold to purchase new perks, relics, and consumables, or gamble using The Dice™ to earn enough gold to finally move out of your cranky old mother's house. That'll show her.

  • Go to the Character screen to sell your perks and relics, allowing you to change your build in the middle of a run, or letting you buy that perfect relic that will complete your build when you're low on gold.

  • Check your Tournament Progress to see how many fights are left until you face a Bracket Champion, or learn what your current bracket is. The tournament will double down on the challenges it throws at you as you jump up in brackets.

  • See what the crowd thinks about you with the Popularity Meter. You will earn increasing rewards and Oil, the new Meta-Game currency, as you level up your popularity. You can increase your popularity during fights using our revamped Combo and Hype systems, rewarding you for getting that sick-ass Wall-Run No Scope 360 Sniper Shot and asking the crowd: ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED? You already know the answer.

Relics

Relics are the weird, nerdy cousins of perks. They don't have active, flashy effects on your build like perks do, but the passive effects they provide will allow you to create deeper, more strategic builds that will let you become devastating in the long term. For example, the Falcon Head relic will lower your ability cooldown for each kill you get while mid-air, allowing you to become a living bomber plane that will never touch the ground if you combine it with the right perks. Or, you can become a venture capitalist using the Economist relic, which increases your projectile count for every 100 gold you spend.

Consumables

Consumables are single-use items that can turn the tide of a fight. You can throw or use one at any point during a fight. They can also be combined with relics or perks to create synergies of their own. For example, the Drop Pod Turret lets you deploy an orbital pod that drops a V8-powered automated turret, which can decimate enemy hordes for 60 seconds.

Fight Cards

When you're ready to advance in the tournament, you will get to choose between 3 Fight Cards. Each fight card is composed of:

  • Objective Type - Each fight has a different objective you need to accomplish before fighting its challenger and winning. For example, in Glory Confirmed, you need to gather x amount of trophies from enemy corpses to win.

  • Modifier - Modifiers change enemy stats, introduce new enemy types, and overall make the fight harder.

  • Map - Yes, we're adding more maps! Each fight card will have a random map that may or may not suit your playstyle.

  • Mutator - Mutators fundamentally change the rules of the game, and might be beneficial or detrimental to you depending on your build. For example, a fight with low gravity will let you fight as if you're on the moon, while the Gigantism mutator will turn enemies into hulking titans that deal double damage, but are incredibly slow.

  • Rewards - Winning a fight will always reward you with a perk and some gold. You will earn more gold depending on the difficulty of the fight.

Finally, you can also choose the Make Bets option to make a fight even harder by adding a mutator or modifier to it. If you make it out of the fight alive, you will receive additional rewards!

Challengers

During each fight, after accomplishing your objective, you will face a challenger who is trying to become the champion just like you are. Challengers are weird, roided-up versions of normal enemies that have randomised mutations on them. For example, TIMMY THE GIANT OF FLAMES would have been a normal fodder enemy, but now he has x10 HP because of the GIANT mutation, and will burn you if you get close to him because of the FLAMES mutation! Dang Timmy, chill out man.

Bracket Champions

At the end of each bracket, which is composed of four normal fights, you will face a Bracket Champion. Bracket champions are difficult boss enemies that will check if your skills and build are ready to move on to the much more challenging next bracket. We'll give you more details on bracket champions in future updates, but in the meantime, here's a teaser of one of the big boys:

New Maps

We haven't been happy with our current map for a while now, and we know you aren't either. That's why we're working on multiple new maps that have been designed from the ground up to be parkour-friendly, and replayable. We will have a longer post dedicated to our new maps in the future, but here's a work-in-progress teaser:

That's it for now! We're going to be announcing some more exciting stuff soon, but until then, make sure to share what you think about the tournament mode from our Discord channel!

See you in the DOME!
