If you've ever wondered how such a rich era of history and mythology like ancient Mesopotamia and Sumeria can influence the world of gaming, then you're in the right place!
In this devlog, we'll get to know more of Depths of Ascension and explore how these ancient civilizations have inspired both the visual and narrative aspects of the game.
To begin with, it's important to understand the cultural and historical significance of these ancient civilizations. Mesopotamia, often referred to as the “Cradle of Civilization”, was home to some of the world's earliest cities and empires. And within this fertile land, the Sumerian civilization flourished, known for its advanced cuneiform writing, complex legal and religious systems, and epic legends such as that of Gilgamesh.
The art of these civilizations wasn’t only aesthetically impressive but also a profound expression of their religious and mythological beliefs. From relief sculptures depicting gods to palace reliefs telling stories of real battles and triumphs, Mesopotamian art offers us an incredible insight into their worldviews and values.
When we began conceiving the art style for the game, we wanted to capture the authenticity and atmosphere of these ancient civilizations. From the details of the clothing to the mysterious symbols engraved on monuments, every visual element was carefully crafted to transport players to an immersive and richly detailed world.
In addition to the art, the game's narrative concept is also inspired by Sumerian narratives. Yehpa's journey in search of her lost sister echoes Ishtar's descent into the underworld in Mesopotamian mythology. Just as Ishtar descends into the dark realms in search of her sister, but also driven by the ambition to acquire knowledge and renewal, Yehpa ventures into unknown and dangerous lands in search of her sister, facing challenges and trials along the way.
The narrative of Depths of Ascension resonates with themes of sacrifice, self-knowledge, and spiritual rebirth present in Ishtar's story, offering players an exciting and meaningful journey.
It is crucial to highlight that Kishar is not limited to being just a fantasy representation of Mesopotamia, but rather a world of its own, full of unique characteristics and peculiarities, where Mesopotamian culture serves as a fundamental inspiration, intertwined with elements of fantasy.
