History of Punk - The Punk Culture

Day 4 of us taking a deeper look into punk! This time the focus will be in the culture of punk!

To no one’s surprise that punk is an influential counterculture that has been around since the 1970s. It became a significant facet of non-mainstream society where the DIY (Do It Yourself) philosophy of punk encourages bands to produce their own music and perform in non-traditional venues.

Punk is loud, full of energy, and often politicized which is loved by the youth as a way to show their grievances to the government and others that will listen. The term punk was actually borrowed from prison slang and was first used in musical context in the early 1970s.

Individualism was important to punk. From the music to the clothing they wore it was a way to express individualism and reject social norms. Tight jeans and jackets. Ripped clothing. Chains. Wacky hairstyles like mohawks or liberty spikes. Bondage trousers. Some even have paint on their clothing. It wasn’t crazy to have symbols to shock people like crucified Jesus and crossed out swastika.
