Burden of Truth changes
A brand new patch for Burden of Truth is now available for everyone to download! Though we're now on the next major patch version, this signifies a core rendering change rather than any significant feature improvements. Still, there are some noteworthy fixes and dialogue changes to check out:
Update Details
Version 1.1.0
Improved a hint in Chapter 3 Trial 3
Added alternate answers to a puzzle in Chapter 3 Trial 3
Fixed Linux graphics API order so that Vulkan is tried before OpenGL
Added DX12 fallback on Windows if DX11 fails to load
Fixed typos in Chapter 3 Trial 1
Added alternate answers to some puzzles in Chapter 3 Trial 1
Added an easter egg to the Defense Lobby level
The most pressing issue that necessitated the speedy release of this update was a problem with the native Linux version of the game, which accidentally prioritized the OpenGL rendering API over Vulkan. This would have been fine for Linux users... if not for the fact that URP decals are not compatible with OpenGL at all. This means Linux and Steam Deck players were missing elements like footprints, dirt paths, grunge, and blood stains, which would've been hard to notice until reaching Chapter 3 as there are these elements are not used as much in the courtroom levels. This should hopefully address the issue and allow the other levels to look the way that they should, but in the case that Vulkan is not available, OpenGL is still used as a fallback. Playing the game without decals is not ideal but still possible, so I've left it as an option for older machines.
It would also appear that DirectX 12 was not listed as an available option for the Windows version of the game, so I've added it as a fallback and I believe the game can be forced to DX12 mode with a command line parameter if needed. Since there's always potential issues with graphics drivers and specific system setups, it's good to have a secondary option available just in case it helps. But as the game is not reliant on DX12 features, DirectX 11 is a good target that is known to be more stable and has been around longer, so that will stay the default.
Lastly, I noticed some players having trouble with certain cross-examinations and the usual alternate logical solutions were added to help improve the experience for anyone coming across those puzzles in the future. There was also an issue where the hint provided for a puzzle in Chapter 3 Trial 3 was not informative enough to pinpoint the answer, so since this text is optional only to people who use the hint button, I added more details to it. I'm always on the lookout for these types of improvements (and typos!) so feel free to let me know if you have any issues when playing! The Burden of Truth Deluxe Edition including both the base game and Official Soundtrack is still available and will soon be on sale later this month:

If you didn't know, I have a YouTube Channel and have been releasing videos talking about game engine technology and how I built levels for Burden of Truth, so feel free to give some of them a watch if you want some behind-the-scenes info! I'm hoping to release some exciting hints about my next project early on in 2026, so I hope you'll stay tuned. In case I don't have anything else to report on before the end of the month, happy holidays and thanks again for playing Burden of Truth this year! Your support has meant the world to me and I would definitely appreciate it if you left a review of the game if you haven't already :) Take care!
