Time for second part my diary: why Botlings?
Building on that foundation of Factorio logistics and Lemmings movement, something was still missing. The factory ran smoothly, but it lacked a narrative heartbeat.
Then, a piece of community feedback changed everything...
Why Not Animals?
While sharing early builds of the game, someone asked me a simple question:"Why didn't you use animals? They’d be way cuter!"
As I mentioned in the previous log, I have a strict rule against animal cruelty in my games. But my reasons go a bit deeper than just a personal preference. Before I became a game developer, I actually spent several years in Africa hunting poachers to protect endangered wildlife. Needless to say, I have a massive soft spot for animals, and exploiting them - even digitally - was never an option for me.
However, that question got the gears turning. If I wasn't going to use animals, what if these mechanical Botlings could evolve to become more animal-like, or even human-like? What if the simple drones you've been using as literal conveyor belts started to wake up?
Flipping the AI Tropes on Their Head
We see the "AI Awakening" theme everywhere in sci-fi and strategy games nowadays - usually, it takes a Skynet or Matrix turn where the machines instantly rebel and try to wipe out humanity. It's an awesome trope, but it almost always focuses on human survival.
Very few games stop to think about the morality of the situation from the robots'perspective.
That is the exact gap I wanted to explore in Botlings. I wanted to challenge the player to think about the near future and the ethical weight of automation. As you design your massive, interlocking logistics networks, your workforce is quietly gaining sentience. Suddenly, you aren't just managing throughput and layout efficiency anymore; you have to face the moral reality of using sentient beings as your factory walls and processors.
The Moral Core of Automation
Adding this philosophical layer gave the gameplay a completely fresh tension. It takes the genre's classic drive for infinite optimization and crashes it directly into a question of empathy. How far are you willing to push your swarm to hit your production targets?
Botlings is a love letter to the strategy titles that make you think, wrapped inside the tight mechanical loop of a hardcore automation game. It’s an experiment in logic, layout, and, ultimately, conscience.
