Magma Blocks are Reworked!
We never quite liked how magma blocks caused an instant Game Over, exploding at the slightest touch. They were needlessly punishing and frustrating to play with, and because of that it was difficult to make fun levels with them. So we used the opportunity of the re-write to re-work!
(bear in mind, the Blocklets are still placeholdering!)
Magma blocks are still scorching hot, and the Blocklets really don't like touching them - but at least they don't explode in your face anymore!
From Hot to Cold
The ice block is our newest addition to our roster. Within its freeze zone, all special traits of other blocks are turned off: sand stops falling, bouncers stop being bouncy, teleporters deactivate...
Oh and - by popular demand - frozen blocks are now slippery! You're welcome!
Alright, that's all from me for now, but we've still got a little something for you from our level designer - a little behind the scenes of how our levels change over time!
Level Design and the Power of People
So as the level designer of your own game, you'd think you'd know everything, right? That's the attitude we had at our first conventions.
You guys picked up the game incredibly fast - some of you even delved into speed running our levels! And that's where the magic happens. Standing next to the players, watching and silently thinking:"Nah, you have to go left. That won´t work.. that.. wait what?!"And boom, there goes your brilliant puzzle.
You can't beat the swarm intelligence of all possible players, so we learned to embrace it! Don't restrict them: If players are smarter than you, give them a nice bonus hat and celebrate together!
In many cases, we did just that! Players found ways to reach new, unexpected places and we realized we could add a bonus star right there. Sometimes, we learnt of entirely new traversal techniques through play-testing at events.
It's all part of the fascinating journey of making a game with your audience, and we are incredibly grateful that you're here with us!
