Begraved - Flesh And Stone

Greetings Gravebound

Welcome to another Dev Delve, we have so much to talk about, including sneak peeks at two upcoming dungeons, along with early looks at swords and fishing rods we’re currently testing.

Weeping Woods

Originally, we planned for three additional dungeons to accompany the Cave Crypts. However, based on demo feedback, it became clear that the early game needed more variety. So, what was the solution?

Another dungeon area.

This gives players a choice between multiple dungeons while working to unlock the next area. With that in mind, here’s a sneak peek at The Weeping Woods.Steam post image

The Weeping Woods is still very much work in progress, blending Halloween vibes, witchy forests, and dark summoning rituals. What you see here is very much a blank canvas, which we are now starting to flesh out more.

Sunken Rest

The Sunken Rest is further along than the Weeping Woods, even though it’s technically the third dungeon.

This area focuses on the dangers lurking in flooded crypts, sewers, and underground waterways, and serves as the lair of a Pandemonium God, the grotesque, Maw and its offspring.

With the introduction of swimming-based exploration, Sunken Rest brings a very different feel compared to the Cave Crypts. The blend of flesh and stone significantly raises the fear factor.

We’ll be doing a deeper dive into Sunken Rest soon but for now, here are a few screenshots we recently shared on our socials. Steam post image

Swords

You asked… so we (mostly) delivered.

One of the biggest pieces of demo feedback was that players often felt powerless against creatures. While some enemies could be damaged with torches or pickaxes, it was clear that a more direct combat option was needed.

So… we added swords. Revolutionary, right?

There’s still work to do to get them feeling right. Our current thinking is that swords will only be found within dungeons, remnants of fallen soldiers, buried with their weapons. Rusted, decayed, but still capable of a few swings before breaking.

Direct combat is tricky to balance. We want players to feel vulnerable, to avoid becoming too powerful, and to reinforce the idea that you’re just humble (and dastardly) grave robbers. At the same time, we’re listening closely to feedback, so expect swords to arrive as part of a larger demo update in the future.

Fishing?!

Fishing in a dark, scary co‑op game?

Sure. Why not.

This actually started as a potential April Fools idea, but the more we thought about it, the more it made sense. After all, Begraved is a “cosy” dark and scary game.

So yeah, fishing is coming. (much to my displeasure, like seriously who actually likes fishing?)

Expect variable loot, junk, and other mysterious items pulled from grim, black waters.
