Always Bet on Quack changes
Performance is extremely important, especially for a multiplayer game that’s meant to be loud, social, and played with friends. As development continues on Always Bet on Quack, we wanted to talk a bit about our approach to performance and why it’s a priority for us.
Designing for Real Hardware
We’re very aware of the realities of the current PC hardware market. Not everyone has a brand new machine, and we don’t believe good performance should be locked behind overpriced RAM sticks.
Our goal is for Always Bet on Quack to run smoothly on modest, real-world PCs. Obviously we cannot build for every single specific kind of set up, but our goal is to get this running above 60fps on 2000 series cards.
Where We Are Now
At the moment, we’re maintaining a steady 60 FPS on a GTX 2080, even during busy multiplayer moments. That’s a solid baseline for us but we want to continue to see if we can make things better. RAM usage could be optimized and we’re looking for ways to improve that.
We’re actively profiling and optimizing with the goal of pushing performance further and improving consistency across a wider range of systems. We are fortunate to have multiple computers to test this on, including a Steam Deck.
What Optimization Looks Like for Us
Optimization is a continuous process throughout development. Some of the areas we’re focusing on include:
Efficient 3D models and materials
Smarter use of lighting and effects
Reducing unnecessary draw calls and overhead
Making sure cosmetic customization doesn’t come at a performance cost
Every improvement adds up, especially in a social space where lots of things are happening at once.
Performance Is a Design Choice
For us, optimization is part of game design. A game that runs well is easier to jump into, easier to play with friends, and more fun overall.
We’ll continue to share updates as we improve performance and work toward broader hardware support.
