The Empire Capital citizens are very reverent about anything to do with amber extraction.

— Look what they say! The Chancellor is honoring the monastery of Akatori with a visit! — A middle-aged woman in a green bonnet and a golden-brown riding coat shoves a newspaper at a fellow passenger.

— The one with the amberized? — The man pulls a monocle from his waistcoat pocket. — Isn’t that dangerous?

— The amberized are the infected ones. — The tram driver turns his head, — but the monks seem like they’re normal people.

— Yeah, yeah, they’re not perceptive to amber, — the student in the right-hand seat joins in, — it’s called immunity.

— Here’s what I’ll tell you… — the man waves his monocle dismissively. — All of them, the non-humans, came right out of the amber.

— Ah, they say those monks are mighty brawlers! — If the tram weren’t running on rails, the driver would’ve crashed it by now. — Maybe they’re training an army in that monastery?

— And the Chancellor is going for a troops review? The monocle man nods, then gives a sly grin. — But here’s what I heard—there's some kind of lab there…

— Right! For studying Akatori! — the woman in the riding coat waves her arms.

The citizens burst out laughing together, while a plainclothes spy at the back of the carriage jots something down in a black notebook.
