changedHello players, in today's news, let's focus on YVY's gameplay. A game with dice, you say? Absolutely! We call YVY an active auto-battler, where the main mechanic and combat revolve around dice! Let's answer a few of your questions:
changedWhy did you choose to go for a strategy game to tell YVY's story? It was a very organic process. The idea for the gameplay and dice-based combat came before the theme and story. As we developed these mechanics, we also built the world around them. We knew we wanted to tell a story about a character overcoming overwhelming odds, which led us to the theme of resistance. Naturally, we found inspiration in the history of our own country.
changedWhy did you decide to go for a dice mechanic? We love dice-based games, especially board games and RPGs. So, we decided we wanted to create a game where dice crafting was at the core of the gameplay. We experimented with several different approaches in our prototypes, but the idea that "your die is your character" ended up being our favorite.
changedWhy only one dice during combat and not more? The biggest reason for using only one die is that the game takes place in real-time rather than in turns. We experimented with versions that used multiple dice and even versions where enemies also rolled dice, but this made the game too chaotic and hard to follow due to multiple dice rolling on the screen at the same time. By focusing on a single six-sided die that is rolled multiple times per battle, we found an interesting balance between luck and strategy.
changedWhat are the different opportunities to customize the dice? You can choose from many different abilities for each of the six faces of the die, creating countless possibilities. Each face can also be upgraded to become stronger. Additionally, enchantments can be attached to each face, granting extra effects. Beyond dice customization, players can build their character using items, talents, artifacts, potions, and active skills known as Battle Drums.
changedWill there be other animal spirits to fight with?Let us know if you have any questions about the gameplay, we'd be more than happy to answer. Come chat on Discord!

Why did you choose to go for a strategy game to tell YVY's story?

It was a very organic process. The idea for the gameplay and dice-based combat came before the theme and story. As we developed these mechanics, we also built the world around them. We knew we wanted to tell a story about a character overcoming overwhelming odds, which led us to the theme of resistance. Naturally, we found inspiration in the history of our own country.

What is an "active" auto-battler combat?

It’s a mix of automatic combat with a touch of player interaction. In essence, YVY’s characters fight each other automatically, but to make the experience more engaging, players have access to limited-use skills that can be strategically activated to influence the outcome of the battle.

Why did you decide to go for a dice mechanic?

We love dice-based games, especially board games and RPGs. So, we decided we wanted to create a game where dice crafting was at the core of the gameplay. We experimented with several different approaches in our prototypes, but the idea that "your die is your character" ended up being our favorite.

Why only one dice during combat and not more?

The biggest reason for using only one die is that the game takes place in real-time rather than in turns. We experimented with versions that used multiple dice and even versions where enemies also rolled dice, but this made the game too chaotic and hard to follow due to multiple dice rolling on the screen at the same time. What are the different opportunities to customize the dice?

You can choose from many different abilities for each of the six faces of the die, creating countless possibilities. Each face can also be upgraded to become stronger. Additionally, enchantments can be attached to each face, granting extra effects. Beyond dice customization, players can build their character using items, talents, artifacts, potions, and active skills known as Battle Drums.

Will there be other animal spirits to fight with?

Yes! We have three playable characters planned for the game’s launch, each with different specializations and exclusive dice faces. While the characters follow certain archetypes, such as Tugã, who is a classic tank with access to stronger defensive abilities, the complete customization of their abilities through dice faces allows for multiple playstyles for each character.
