World of Slime changes
It is a great pleasure to meet you. We are TEAM42, currently developing the MMORPG World of Slime.
Starting today, we would like to share our Dev. Notes from time to time to show you the thoughts and philosophy behind the development of World of Slime.
Our very first story is about the two most fundamental actions in this game: “Taming” and “Synthesis.”
In the World of Slime, there is a wide variety of Slimes waiting to be tamed!
What is Taming?
Some slimes are easily found in specific areas, while others appear depending on the time or situation. Players can choose to just pass them by, engage them in battle, or use a Cube to make them a partner.
Cubes are special tools used to tame slimes. They come in various tiers, and higher-grade Cubes increase your chances of taming rare and unique slimes.
The core emotions we wanted to focus on when designing the taming system were the joy of discovery and collection. We designed the gameplay flow to feel natural and rewarding: weakening a slime, throwing a Cube, and successfully logging a new entry into your Slimepedia.
While developing the taming system, we faced more unexpected questions than we anticipated. What is the best UI/UX design for throwing Cubes? Does a successful tame feel rewarding enough? When a tame fails, can players intuitively understand what to do next? We are constantly fine-tuning these elements based on internal tests and play-test feedback.
Create New Slimes Through Synthesis!
Tamed slimes can interact with players in various ways, fighting alongside you in battle or helping you cross otherwise impassable terrain. In our game, slimes also tie into a crucial feature called “Synthesis.”
Synthesis is a unique feature in our game that allows players to combine slimes to obtain a brand-new one. It’s a special mechanic tailored specifically to slimes, whose liquids and shapes can change freely.
We intentionally avoided giving players a concrete answer upfront in the Synthesis system. Instead, we want to create a flow where players wonder what kind of slimes to mix, check the results, and then ponder their next combination. You might combine slimes with similar characteristics, or deliberately try a mix that seems completely mismatched. Getting the expected result brings joy, but encountering an unexpected slime brings excitement as it adds a new memo to your Slimepedia.
The exact moments of joy we hope players experience through Synthesis are:
What will I get if I mix these two?
Why did these two slimes turn into this?
Where can I use this new slime on my next adventure?
By taming and synthesizing step by step, every MMORPG player will eventually discover their own unique playstyle and create their own story! That is why we chose to start our first Dev. Note with Taming and Synthesis. These two actions will be the most frequent loops in the game, and they are where each player’s unique journey begins.
Thank you to everyone who is waiting for World of Slime. If you found a slime you like, or if you enjoyed our development story, please add us to your Steam Wishlist and Follow us!
In the next Dev. Note, we will talk about how the slimes you meet are recorded in the Slimepedia.
