changedMaking my way through this pale waste as I do on a regular basis, I was amazed to see some movement besides the occasional shifting of the trees and grass. There, standing a small ways off from the road, was a deer. Almost pure white in its appearance but for its black snout and facial features, it was nearly invisible against the bleached backdrop.
addedNot wanting to squander this opportunity, I quickly grabbed my new digital camera (thanks Claire!) and pulled over to see if I could get a shot. The car window was hurting the quality of the image, so I took a risk in opening my door in the hope for a better angle. My greed repaid me in the immediate alert and escape of the deer I had been so fixated on.
changedDisappointment welled up in me, causing me to swing my car door shut in frustration. The sound went out like a gunshot in the eerily quiet landscape, but it was soon followed by another. A quick flutter of wings burst forth from a nearby tree in response and I could just spot a bleached white bird flapping away from the perceived danger.

I now know of two animals dwelling here that appear to be more normal than expected despite their pale exteriors. Could this forest hold nothing more than the usual array of woodland inhabitants void of their usual complexion? I itch to know more...
