Westlanders changes
In our previous entries, we talked about the wagon, the shaping of the world and the beauty of the wild. There are so many different ways to bring the game to life!
What transforms Westlanders into a world driven by adrenaline, survival, resource management, and facing the unknown?
We questioned the dev team about their inspirations.
Cinematic & Music Inspirations: Magnifying the Details
Movie inspiration 🎬
To achieve this level of immersion, the development team looked beyond other video games. Drawing heavy inspiration from the soulful and raw aesthetic of Western cinema and literature.
The team focused on something very specific: mood.
While many of you often mentioned Red Dead Redemption or The Revenant for their atmosphere, a specific visual touchstone for the development team was the evocative imagery found in stories like the movie"Train Dreams".

These are the moments that make the world feel real. The ones you don’t always notice… but always feel.
Music shaping 🎵
This beautiful journey will not have the same taste without the talent of an amazing music composer. Sophian Alkurdi, is actually working on different soundtracks to make you dive into this wild world, shaping not just what you see, but also what you feel.

Building Characters: Between Reality & Interpretation
Building the world also means bringing its people to life.
When work started for character design, the team wanted to make sure that their designs were cohesive with the world. These are not city-folk, but rugged survivalists. Mended clothes full of tears and scratches and crudened facial expressions from being exposed to the elements. The goal is to create characters that feel grounded, authentic… and alive.
Because in a world like Westlanders, a glance can tell a story.
Tension & Danger : The art of suspense
But the West is not just beauty. This game is also about tension and danger. Creating those moments of suspense often comes from unexpected places — a film scene, a photograph, a memory.
A silhouette in the distance. A sudden stillness. A feeling that something isn’t right.
These are the invisible threads that build anticipation… and keep you on edge.
Creating those situations can also be inspired unconsciously from certain movies that you have seen in your childhood.

Capturing the wild
Recreating the natural beauty of the wild is also deeply rooted in visual inspiration references. (for example: Andrea Baratte @montanawild_ on instagram
From existing imagery, photography, and real landscapes, the development team studied how light moves, how nature breathes, how vastness can feel both peaceful… and threatening.
Because the wild isn’t just a backdrop, it’s a character of its own.

At the end of the day, everything comes down to one thing: Emotion.
The way a face reacts. The way a moment lingers. The way a player feels something without knowing exactly why.
That’s how the team wanted to build the game and give you the best experience with Westlanders.
