VentureVerse: Legend of Ulora changes
What?
On Monday the 19th of January 2026, VentureVerse: Legend of Ulora will become available for free indefinitely. You can play the whole game from start to finish, including online co-op and the level editor for free!
Why?
VentureVerse is a very special game for me, as it was my first ever game release. It took way too long to make and it didn't break even, but I am ultimately very proud of what I was able to make, along with the help of musician and SFX artist Emmanuel Lagumbay.
Making games is hard, especially when you're learning it all as you go. Fortunately, my experience making VentureVerse eventually allowed me to take an opportunity to join an indie team, and we're finally releasing our game later this year (more info on that below).
For me, the most awkward part of my solo game development experience was the business side. The game has not been making money for several years, but I've still had to treat it like a real business, filing tax returns and confirmation statements. Widefrog Games Ltd was only ever used as a legal entity for tax purposes, and so I have decided to dissolve the company.
The result is I no longer have a legal entity for money made from VentureVerse to go into, but I certainly don't want VentureVerse to disappear, so I have decided to make it free.
Oh, Okay.
Before you go, maybe you're interested in the game I'm currently working on, as part of the new(ish) indie team Cute Newt. We're making a chaotic, multiplayer action-adventure mashed up with a life-sim! It's called Wildekin and we're planning to release it on Steam and Xbox platforms later this year.
Add it to your wishlist over here.
Do it.
Do it now.
Thanks,
Matt
