Whey! The Game Design students at Kristiania University of Applied Sciences have now wrapped up the pre-production and concept phases for their very own version of Trolls vs Vikings!
It all began with 16 student-developed game concepts, narrowed down to 8 finalists. Over the past few weeks, the students have created prototypes, written full Game Design Documents (GDDs), built Gantt charts for production planning, explored art styles, and done everything it takes to craft a professional game pitch. The entire process also forms part of their graded coursework, a full simulation of working in a real studio environment.
This week they presented their concepts, and it was an absolute pleasure to witness!
From puzzlers and tactical strategy to action-packed and dialogue-driven games, the range of ideas was impressive, and the presentation quality was top-notch (a rare and welcome surprise in student showcases).
After much deliberation and voting among both students and faculty, one concept stood out above the rest: “ Fjord Fury ”, a completely wacky boat racer where you steer a troll-modified Viking ship through wild Nordic landscapes. Even in its early prototype, it was clear there was something special about it.
Now, all the students are uniting behind Fjord Fury, moving into full production together. The game is slated for release on Itch.io. More news on that soon!
We can’t wait to see how it turns out — and it’s been fantastic to see Trolls vs Vikings reimagined in such creative new ways.
All the best,
Jørgen
