addedTo unlock new capabilities, you need to rebuild your infrastructure. This happens in two ways:
changedThis is where the gameplay loop tightens. You don’t just "learn" how to pick a digital lock by reading a book. You need to build the Electronics Station to practice and craft the necessary hacking tools. You want to fence high-end jewelry? You need to construct a Precision Workbench to disassemble watches and clean diamonds first.
addedBuild & Upgrade: Use those resources to construct a new workstation in your Hub.
addedUnlock & Train: The new station unlocks a new skill tree or tool set (e.g., glass cutting, signal jamming).
addedEscalate: Those new skills allow you to bypass the security systems of wealthier, more dangerous neighborhoods.
changedWe believe this approach makes every theft feel purposeful. You’re not just grinding for a high score; you’re stealing to build the ultimate workshop that lets you pull off the perfect crime.

In our last update, we talked about focusing on the core thief experience and making the hideout a meaningful place. Today, we want to explain why that hideout matters so much and how you’ll turn a run-down warehouse into a master thief’s headquarters.

Starting from Zero

In Thief Simulator 2 VR, we’re stripping away the safety net. You don’t start with a fully equipped base of operations. You begin in a practically empty, derelict Hub. The previous crew is gone, the equipment has been seized, and you’re left with the bare minimum.

This emptiness isn’t just for atmosphere - it’s the foundation of your progression. Every piece of furniture, every workbench, and every tool station you see later in the game will be there because you put it there.

The Reconstruction Loop

We’ve designed a direct link between what you steal and how you grow. Progression isn’t just an abstract XP bar filling up in the background; it’s physical and visible.

To unlock new capabilities, you need to rebuild your infrastructure. This happens in two ways:

  1. Sourcing Parts: While exploring neighborhoods, you’re not just looking for cash. You’re scouting for specific components - electronics, mechanical parts, and tools - that you can drag back home instead of selling.

  2. Black Market Investments: The cash you do earn from fencing goods can be reinvested into heavy equipment or specialized blueprints that you can’t find in a suburban living room.

Workstations = Skills

This is where the gameplay loop tightens. You don’t just "learn" how to pick a digital lock by reading a book. You need to build the Electronics Station to practice and craft the necessary hacking tools. You want to fence high-end jewelry? You need to construct a Precision Workbench to disassemble watches and clean diamonds first.

This creates a natural, satisfying rhythm:

  1. Scout & Steal: Raid lower-tier houses for basic loot and scrap parts.

  2. Build & UpgradeUse those resources to construct a new workstation in your Hub.
  3. Unlock & TrainThe new station unlocks a new skill tree or tool set (e.g., glass cutting, signal jamming).
  4. EscalateThose new skills allow you to bypass the security systems of wealthier, more dangerous neighborhoods.

Visualizing Progress

In VR, we want progression to feel tangible. By the mid-game, your Hub won’t look like the empty shell you started with. It will be cluttered with the tools of your trade - a testament to your career. You’ll look around and see the physical evidence of your heist history: from a simple crowbar leaning against a crate to a high-tech hacking center humming in the corner.

We believe this approach makes every theft feel purposeful. You’re not just grinding for a high score; you’re stealing to build the ultimate workshop that lets you pull off the perfect crime.
