The Storyteller changes
This update introduces a completely new way to experience The Storyteller. Whether you are building a standalone RPG or running a live TTRPG session like D&D or Pathfinder, you now have dedicated tools to manage your adventures.
Game Mode Selection
Before starting a new journey or loading a save, Hosts can now choose between two modes:
Classic Mode: Focuses on the traditional The Storyteller RPG experience. Build your world as before with interactive elements like Story Tokens, NPCs, and Enemies, then invite your Heroes to play through your story.
Virtual Table Mode: Optimized for TTRPG sessions. The Host acts as the Virtual Storyteller, while players join as Virtual Table Characters with permission to move tokens, use measurement tools, and much more.
Virtual Tabletop (VTT)
We have implemented several new tools designed to assist your online roleplaying sessions with a dynamic, editable, digital environment:
- Real-Time MapmakingIn Virtual Table mode, the Virtual Storyteller can edit the map in real-time. Add new environmental elements or animations on the fly. If your players ask if there are any trees nearby, just place them. If someone destroys a table, simply delete it (with cool SFX and VFX). You can modify your map as you like while your players plan their next move.
Token System: Place movable Tokens with premade or custom icons. Add names, borders, status icons, and statistics like HP to manage them.
Create, Remove, Modify, and Move: Both the Storyteller and the Virtual Table players can create, modify, remove, and move Tokens. The Game Master can build the environment while players help manage their own Token characters.
Icons: Use our premade icons or import your own for specific characters.
Names: Identify everyone even if they share the same icon (e.g., give 5 goblins unique names to distinguish them in an encounter).
Conditions: Display visual icons above tokens for specific states, such as Raging or Stunned.
Status: Track Health, spell slots, reactions, legendary resistances, or any important attribute. The Storyteller can choose which statuses to reveal or hide from players.
Borders: Assign unique borders to tokens to highlight important NPCs or tougher enemies.
Scaling: Adjust token sizes to create larger creatures (2x2, 3x3, etc.).
Area Markers: Place colored markers to represent spell effects or cones of effect.
Fog of War (FoW): Use Area Markers with the Fog of War option to hide or reveal areas. Use a black square marker to hide a room; with the FoW option toggled, the Virtual Storyteller can see through it, but the players cannot.
Ruler: Measure distances between points or tokens.
Select your favorite Ruler design.
Set the distance type (feet, meters, or custom).
Choose to show the measurement to others or keep it private.
Pointer: Use the Pointer tool to highlight specific points for the group.
Activates a colored Pointer that follows your mouse location.
Select your favorite Pointer design.
Your username is displayed above the pointer for clear communication.
Welcome Page
With the expansion of Virtual Table mode, The Storyteller now offers multiple ways to play which could be confusing for new players. You can create your own turn-based RPG as a Storyteller, play a campaign as a Hero, or use the system as a Virtual Tabletop.
We created a Welcome Page to clarify these options, helping you select the mode that suits you best without being overwhelmed by choices.
Other QoL & Bugfixes
Removed and replaced several unnecessary UI elements in the Main Menu for a cleaner experience.
