changedHi. FINAL PATCH UPDATE This is more or less an announcement for an upcoming patch rather than a patch itself. I've received some reports over two main issues: an achievement softlock and lack of a skip button.
fixedThese are issues I have been attempting to address for a while behind the scenes, and while I'm fairly certain I've fixed the achievement thing, the skip button has been a constant thorn in my side. The reason for it is kind of long an convoluted, but let's just say it caused certain animations and events to not load properly.
changedSo that's it then, right? problem solved? Well, almost. I still need to test everything before I'm sure it's ready, and I need to remember how to properly publish it to Steam without breaking it again (sorry about that). But once that happens, you'll all finally be able to skip previously read text and not mash the space bar for 10 hours.
addedBut in addition to that, there's two new features I want to implement; cloud storage and data resets. I noticed that whenever this game gets updated or if I uninstall and reinstall it, all data gets deleted, which sucks and I didn't know would happen. This is because I never set up cloud storage, which makes sense in hindsight, but I'll have that set up alongside the update. I don't know how it works, so we'll see what happens.
changedData reset just refers to a big, ugly, red button you'll be able to find in the main menu which allows you to delete (most) persistent data. This includes all achievements, memory access, and ending stickers. This does not include previously read text however, so you should still be able to skip text.
changedIt's completely optional and just there if you want to replay everything all over again. I'm also considering a "disable memory" button in case it gets annoying during achievement hunts. Okay, enough about that, let's acknowledge the mask-shaped elephant in the room...............

I say all of this to say that I finally, FINALLY found a solution for it after all this time. I discovered it whilst working on my next game, which had a similar issue until now.

MIRROR DRAMA PAGE IS NOW LIVE!! This is the "next game" I keep referring to. It's an RPG/social sim that takes heavy inspiration from the Persona games and late 90's aesthetics. It also takes place in the same universe as The Retro Exorcist, so you might notice a few references here and there. The Steam page is live right now, so go check that out if you're interested, it's even got a trailer and breakdown of it's gameplay. Mirror Drama
