The Black Ice changes
A few months ago, our survival horror game The Black Ice entered Early Access. Since then, we've received a huge amount of feedback, suggestions, and bug reports from players. Thank you to everyone who has already visited Vostok Station and shared their experience with us.
The Black Ice is a survival horror game set in Antarctica. After a mysterious extraterrestrial substance is discovered deep within the ice, all communication with the Vostok research facility suddenly ceases. What was supposed to be a groundbreaking scientific discovery quickly turns into a nightmare. Players must explore the abandoned station, uncover the secrets hidden beneath the Antarctic ice, and fight to survive when every breath could be their last.
Today we'd like to share what the team has been working on over the past few months and give you a glimpse of what to expect from our first major content update.
The update will introduce two brand-new chapters, adding approximately 90 minutes of gameplay, possibly even more. But that's only part of what's coming.
Fixing Issues and Improving the Experience
One of our highest priorities has been addressing the issues reported by players.
Over the past months, we've reviewed all accumulated feedback and implemented a large number of fixes, covering both technical problems and various gameplay-related issues. The goal was simple: make the experience smoother, more stable, and more immersive for everyone returning to Vostok Station.
New Chapters and Unexplored Locations
The upcoming update introduces two completely new locations.
For now, we'd rather avoid revealing too much and spoil the sense of discovery, but we're excited to share a few new screenshots.
Let's just say one thing: some secrets beneath the Antarctic ice were better left undisturbed. 🙂
P.S. We've also added some rather unusual new enemies. Arachnophobes have been warned.
A New Interface and Improved Audio
Over the past months, we've completely redesigned the game's user interface.
Every UI element has been updated with a new visual style that better reflects the atmosphere of The Black Ice while also improving usability and readability.
We've also spent a significant amount of time revisiting the game's entire soundscape, not just the new content. Ambient sounds, interactions, environmental audio, and overall sound design have all received major improvements. We hope these changes will make exploring the Antarctic facility feel even more tense and unsettling.
New Weapons, Mechanics, and Puzzles
Development hasn't stopped with new locations.
We've added a brand-new weapon, introduced new gameplay mechanics, and created several fresh puzzles for players to solve.
The stealth system has also received a substantial overhaul. We want stealth gameplay to become a more rewarding and meaningful way to survive, offering players additional options when facing the horrors lurking throughout the station.
In addition, we've developed two new melee combat systems, affecting both the Polar Explorer and Alexey, the game's protagonist. Combat encounters now feel more dynamic, impactful, and varied.
Development Continues
While most of the content is already complete, there are still several important milestones ahead.
The team is currently finishing work on the second boss encounter, polishing the new levels, and finalizing the remaining cinematic sequences.
All voice-over recordings for the update have already been completed, and all required character mocap sessions have been recorded and integrated into the project.
We're getting very close to the moment when we'll once again open the doors of Vostok Station and invite you to explore its newest and darkest corners.
We'll continue sharing development updates every month and keep you informed about our progress.
Thank you to everyone who continues to support The Black Ice.
See you in the next development diary.
