SuperColony changes
In nature, whenever an ant has something worth communicating to the rest of the colony, they make a new pheromone marker. They do this for food, threats, and even new locations for homes!
In SuperColony, you will use pheromones to direct your colony too! You will place markers with control over range and importance. Those markers send the signal you want to the entire colony AI, and then they will determine which ants are the best for the job!
You can set different types of pheromones, from Exploration to Harvest and War, down to more specific options within each, like Guarding and Patrolling within the War pheromone.
In nature, ants place pheromones when they encounter something important, and then they run back to the colony, leaving behind them a trail. The message of what they found is embedded in the chemicals that make the trail up! Isn’t that so clever? The trail both leads you to the destination and tells you what you will find when you get there! Ants truly are clever little creatures..
In SuperColony, your ants help you too by automatically placing pheromone markers at key points of interest, like when they find new food or something threatening or curious. The rest of the colony will respond to these pheromones, heading off to collect resources or preparing for battle.
Intriguing Smells
So far, we have talked about how you and your colony will place pheromones. There is another type of smell in SuperColony that utilizes this same pheromone system, but you do not control it.
Your enemies and extensive food collections give off smells that travel through the world. Your ants can detect those smells and begin a search in that direction if they think the clue is worth investigating. Otherwise, they might place a guard pheromone if it seems like it may be a threat.
Since you will also be able to see those curious smell effects wafting through the air, you may place an exploration pheromone out in the distant fog for the colony to respond to, searching for risk and riches. This system is a large part of the feel of our gameplay; it will allow you to focus on the strategy while also having the time to enjoy watching the grand drama found within the tiny world of SuperColony.
