What is Sinweaver and why should I care?

First of all thank you for taking the time to look at and take interest in our project, it really means a lot to us!

We wanted to make our first steam post something that’ll age well and serves as a summary for the game. In the future these updates will likely be developer logs and a “what cool stuff is around the corner” style announcement.

But we’ll get right into it!

What is Sinweaver?

Sinweaver is a 2d action Metroidvania that has you cutting your way through the denizens of hell as you try to find a way of escaping this twisted afterlife. The game uses an overworld to separate levels but still allows for the normal backtracking that has come to define the genre.

You as the player will unlock new pathways on the overworld as you explore and interact with the world and characters that populate the Circle of Wrath. Allowing for you to find secrets, forgotten knowledge and legendary boons of power that will let you crush your enemies!

The game will have challenging moments and will require you to use all the tools at your disposal whether that’s parrying enemies blows to charge your Fury abilities or empowering yourself by stealing enemies sins to restore your lost health. There’s a lot of mechanics and collectibles on offer in our game and we’re excited to show you more as the months go on!

What makes it special?

The overworld has come to define a lot about this project and really sets Sinweaver apart from other games like Last Faith, Hollow knight and Nine sols. This overworld basically means that you never got horribly lost as you always have a area to return to regain your bearings and you’ll always know where to go next as we break our game world down into a series of large levels, side levels and challenges. The large levels function as mini Metroidvania in of themselves where some will require for you to explore past area in that same level/ area to progress. They’re big enough for you to temporarily get lost but not so large that you feel helplessly lost and need to look up a guide online.Steam post image

We have some amazing artists working on this project which really brings the world to life, whether that’s the portrait art created by Gusty Moss as seen here.

Or the hand drawn animation made by Andrew Nguyen that adds a ton of dynamism to every creature and character that we add to the game.

All these characters and enemies start their lives as designs made by our wonderfully talented character designer Libby Whitehouse who manages to strike a balance between charming and strange as seen here with some of our games concept art.

And everything is further reinforced by our backgrounds that the games Creative lead James Maw is responsible for making.

All this comes together to make for a hand crafted and charming experience that isn’t afraid to dip its toes into darker subjects and deliver a narrative befitting the hells.

What are the sources of inspiration?

The team has a vast array of game that we took inspiration from the make this game. Gameplay wise games like Nine sols and Doom were huge inspirations with Cupheads overworld being the thing that ultimately sold us on the idea of using this for our project. Artistically the core aesthetic takes inspiration from games like Hades and Hollow Knight with a tiny bit of Darkest Dungeon but this is more reflected in the main characters design rather than the overall art-style.

How long will it take to make?

We think of our game like a nice Sunday roast. The best roasts are when you slow cook the meat and don’t tamper with it during the cooking process. We’re treating our game a lot like this and we’re dedicated to making it as good as possible so we’re not rushing for a deadline that we know will compromise the quality of the experience.

When we know for sure that we can hit a specific date we’ll let everyone know but right now we’re all juggling other jobs alongside game dev so the short answer is “It’ll be done when we’re happy with it”.

Some people might ask “Why did you announce it so early then if you don’t have a release date?” and the answer to this is simple. We do have a ideal release date that we’re aiming for but it’s too soon to make it public since there’s a lot of variables that we can’t account for. Additionally Indie games need to build traction as early as possible to have a chance at relevancy since you can’t just shadow drop your indie game and expect it to float to the top of steam. A lot needs to be done before that, and we need to spread as much awareness as possible before we put our game out there for people to play.

Closing message
