changedIt's been a while since I've given any sort of an update with the last one being posted 7 years ago in 2018. When I first made this game I was 18 years old working at a grocery store. Now I am 28 years old and have two young kids who love playing this game and laughing at Buttface ːsmbuttfaceː. The most endearing and most popular character to have come out of Shoppy Mart: Steam Edition. Since the last update here I have made a few small games over on pezomi.itch.io for different game jams or just for fun but have not embarked on a larger scale project that has seen the light of day since Shoppy Mart: Steam Edition. ːshoppymartː
addedAs the 10 year anniversary of Shoppy Mart was approaching I thought it would be fun to do a little quality of life update for some of the issues players have run into over the years but at this point do not think it will be possible to do so as the source code for the most recent update, 1.5 seems to have not made it's way through the several computer changes, backups, and resets since 2018. The closest version I could find was a 1.2 update, which is missing so many key features that were added and bug fixes that it seems silly to go back to that version because I would have to re-add features, fix bugs, ect, that it would really be a step-back and not much of an update. I have access to the files from the 1.5 update just not the actual project files I used to develop the game, which is unfortunate as I would have liked to be able to provide a small update here in 2025.
addedHowever, with all of this diving back into the code, files, and history of the game. It got me thinking about all of the features, ideas, and what I've learned over the past 10 years and how I would go about improving or changing things if I were to make it today. It got me thinking about the multitude of concepts and ideas I had for Shoppy Mart 2, including one that I began to flesh out called Shoppy Mart 2: The Shoppening, that had a large focus on the comedy of the game. The closest I ever actually came to working on a sequel was during Covid when I thought it'd be fun to make an essential workers update that for this game but ran into the same issue as I did now, where I couldn't find the source code for any of the more recent versions and began working on a new version completely from scratch before I eventually shelved it.
addedIn the past few months I have begun to work slowly on a new Shoppy Mart. Whether it's actually called Shoppy Mart 2, I am not sure yet. In the 10 years since I released Shoppy Mart the gaming landscape has completely changed. YouTubers were a thing, but really not at the size, scale, or professionalism that it has now. I believe I can make a much better game now with a much larger emphasis on the game being fun as opposed to a simulation. When I made Shoppy Mart back in 2015 I wanted to make a game where you were a grocery store clerk, not a game where it was fun to be a grocery store clerk, if that makes sense. Since I originally released this game I have gotten quite a bit better at programming, game design, and understand much better now what it takes to make a full game. I won't promise that my art has improved by much, but you'll have to wait and see! haha! ːsmdevilː
