changedNot Just a Backstabbing ThiefThe first thing that comes to mind for most people when they think of rogues is the thief sneaking up behind an unsuspecting victim and either pickpocketing them or outright murdering them via a stab in the back. However, the rogue can be much more than that. With class skills that include Appraisal, Gather Information and virtually all of the social influence skills, a rogue can make a great “face” for the party, handling all sorts of interactions from negotiating rewards to settling disputes between belligerents.
changedBut Kind of, Sort of Mostly a Backstabbing ThiefWhile the above is true, the rogue’s defining characteristic in most games is his backstab ability. Rogues gain additional damage to any living target that is flanked. In addition, they gain the ability to improve their Sneak Attack ability to inflict Strength damage and can gain the ability to make Attacks of Opportunity whenever an enemy is damaged by one of the rogue’s allies.
changedScout ExtraordinaireWith the abilities to hide in the shadows and move without making a sound, a rogue is the ultimate scout in the party. His ability to detect traps and bonuses to Armor Class against attacks made by traps make him the most survivable character for scouting the paths ahead as well. Just don’t get into a fight while the rest of the party is two rooms behind!
changedSurviving on the Front lineWhile the rogue is not proficient with either medium or heavy armor, he often spends time fighting on the front line, in order to take advantage of his Sneak Attack ability, which, even with ranged weapons, only works within 30 feet. He has a few special tricks in order to help him survive next to the hulking brutes with their armor and greatswords.
changedSurviving on the Front lineFirstly, at level 4, the rogue has the Uncanny Dodge ability, which means he is never caught flat-footed unless he is completely unable to move. At level 8, the rogue gains Improved Uncanny Dodge, which means he cannot be flanked or Sneak Attacked by opposing rogues.
changedSurviving on the Front lineAdditionally, a rogue can gain the ability to make a Defensive Roll once per day. This ability triggers anytime a rogue would be reduced to 0 hitpoints by a physical attack. A Defensive Roll gives the rogue a second chance to entirely avoid the damage via a successful Reflex saving throw.

Not Just a Backstabbing Thief

The first thing that comes to mind for most people when they think of rogues is the thief sneaking up behind an unsuspecting victim and either pickpocketing them or outright murdering them via a stab in the back. However, the rogue can be much more than that. With class skills that include Appraisal, Gather Information and virtually all of the social influence skills, a rogue can make a great “face” for the party, handling all sorts of interactions from negotiating rewards to settling disputes between belligerents.

But Kind of, Sort of Mostly a Backstabbing Thief

While the above is true, the rogue’s defining characteristic in most games is his backstab ability. Rogues gain additional damage to any living target that is flanked. In addition, they gain the ability to improve their Sneak Attack ability to inflict Strength damage and can gain the ability to make Attacks of Opportunity whenever an enemy is damaged by one of the rogue’s allies.

Scout Extraordinaire

With the abilities to hide in the shadows and move without making a sound, a rogue is the ultimate scout in the party. His ability to detect traps and bonuses to Armor Class against attacks made by traps make him the most survivable character for scouting the paths ahead as well. Just don’t get into a fight while the rest of the party is two rooms behind!

Surviving on the Front line

While the rogue is not proficient with either medium or heavy armor, he often spends time fighting on the front line, in order to take advantage of his Sneak Attack ability, which, even with ranged weapons, only works within 30 feet. He has a few special tricks in order to help him survive next to the hulking brutes with their armor and greatswords.

Firstly, at level 4, the rogue has the Uncanny Dodge ability, which means he is never caught flat-footed unless he is completely unable to move. At level 8, the rogue gains Improved Uncanny Dodge, which means he cannot be flanked or Sneak Attacked by opposing rogues.

Additionally, a rogue can gain the ability to make a Defensive Roll once per day. This ability triggers anytime a rogue would be reduced to 0 hitpoints by a physical attack. A Defensive Roll gives the rogue a second chance to entirely avoid the damage via a successful Reflex saving throw.

The Slippery Mind ability gives rogues a second saving throw against any enchantment or magical effect that would control him or compel him to do something, helping him avoid being magically held or dominated.

Lastly, the Evasion and Improved Evasion abilities give the rogue a chance to reduce or even entirely avoid the damage he would have otherwise received from a magical attack that allows a Reflex save.

A Class for All Playstyles

Rogues vary from the high-intelligence Skill Monkey, capable of striking a favorable deal with even the shrewdest merchant and disabling the most devious device, to the nimble acrobat, climbing sheer walls and dancing amongst the traps, to the dark, brooding assassin.

What sort of rogue will you be building for your party?
