Howdy, Pioneers,

Spring has sprung out here on the frontier, and the valley is lookin' better than ever. We've been putting in some serious work over the past few weeks, and this month we're excited to pull back the curtain on some big changes happening under the hood, and right there on the surface where you can see them.

Let's get into it.

A New Engine Under the Hood

We have some news we've been sittin' on for a while now. Red Rust Pioneers has been upgraded from Unreal Engine 5.4 to Unreal Engine 5.7, and it's been a game changer for us.

This wasn't a small undertaking, but the results speak for themselves. The upgrade has opened the door to a whole suite of next-generation features that are helping us deliver the kind of visual quality we've always wanted for this game. We've begun leaning into powerful Unreal Engine systems like Nanite and Procedural Content Generation (PCG), which are letting us push the detail and richness of the world further than ever before, while simultaneously giving us better tools to keep performance smooth.

Because here's the thing: looking pretty doesn't count for much if the game doesn't run well. Every visual improvement we make goes hand-in-hand with an optimization pass. We're constantly balancing fidelity with frame rate, and we think we're striking a good balance. It's one of those behind-the-scenes battles that players rarely see, but it matters more than almost anything else we do.

The Frontier, Reimagined

So what does all this actually look like in practice? Well, take a look around.

The forests of Red Rust Pioneers have had a serious visual overhaul. The grass is lusher and more varied, the trees cast longer and more natural shadows, wildflowers dot the meadows, and the way light filters through the canopy at dawn has us stopping mid-playtest just to take it all in. We've put a lot of work into making the world feel alive; right down to the way vegetation sways gently in the wind.

Now, some of you sharp-eyed Pioneers might remember what things looked like not too long ago. Here's a quick comparison to show how far we've come:

The difference is night and day; quite literally, in fact, because we've also been workin' on the lighting. Sunrises and sunsets paint the landscape in a whole new way, and even the moonlit nights have gotten a little brighter so you can actually see where you're going after dark. No more stumbling into trees at midnight. Well, less stumbling, anyway.

Fresh Off the Rack

While we're on the subject of things that look good in the light, feast your eyes on this:

That's our new tanning rack, and if you look closely, you'll notice something special about the hides. The way the light passes through the stretched leather is thanks to a technique called subsurface scattering - it simulates how real light behaves when it hits thin, semi-translucent materials. The result is that warm, glowing quality you see in the screenshot, and it makes the whole scene feel that much more grounded and real.

Little details like this are what we mean when we talk about pushing visual fidelity. It's not just about big sweeping vistas (though we love those too). It's about the small, authentic touches that make the frontier feel like a place you could actually live in.

Your Voice on the Trail

We've been runnin' some polls over on our Discord lately, and the results have been real interesting.
