Repeated intro

Hello everyone! It's been a while, so it's about time to give an update on what's been in the works for Range is HOT!

removedGameplayThe biggest change that's currently in the pipeline is related to our character controller. Specifically, the hands and guns are getting overhauled to a physics-based interaction system. This means you can no longer put your hands or guns through walls! We find this to be much more immersive.
addedGameplayAnother feature of this character controller is teleportation. You are teleported instantly, and the time it would have taken to walk that distance is added to the penalty times at the end of the round.
changedGameplayThe final major change is the addition of per-gun calibration. Yaw, pitch, roll, and positional offset are all supported.
changedGameplayAll of these features have complete foundations, but there is still a lot of testing and bugfixing to be done before release.
changedCourse EditorThe course editor is still a work in progress. Courses are able to be built, but usability is still in the polishing stages. A server is in early development as well, in order to support sharing courses and storing leaderboard data for each custom course.
changedEngine UpgradeThe game is going through yet another engine upgrade. The engine version we were using (Unity 2022.3) has reached end of support, so we are upgrading to Unity 6 for the next round of long term support. The upgrade has fortunately been going smoothly so far.

Course Editor

The course editor is still a work in progress. Courses are able to be built, but usability is still in the polishing stages. A server is in early development as well, in order to support sharing courses and storing leaderboard data for each custom course.

When the editor gets released, it will likely still be in a very alpha state and in need of feedback. The initial version will also only save locally at first, and custom courses will only be playable through the course editor, but we will include instructions for manually sharing course files with friends!

Engine Upgrade

The game is going through yet another engine upgrade. The engine version we were using (Unity 2022.3) has reached end of support, so we are upgrading to Unity 6 for the next round of long term support. The upgrade has fortunately been going smoothly so far.

Timelines

As a passion project, Range is Hot has been on the back burner for a while now, which makes development both slow and inconsistent. That makes it difficult to determine when the next update will be finished. That said, it is still in the works, and we thank you for sticking with us!
