The incident was caused by a collision between three Italian aircrafts during an exhibition flight of the legendary Frecce Tricolore. Mario Naldini and Ivo Nutarelli, expert pilots and instructors, died that day. Naldini and Nutarelli, on the evening of June 27th, 1980, signaled a coded alarm, supposedly because they intercepted one or more foreign fighters covertly flying in the Italian airspace. Shortly after, the Itavia DC9 was hit by a missile of unknown origin. Was Ramstein an accident? This is one of the questions that Progetto Ustica presents to its players.
