added(For those of you new to Political Arena, I'm the only person working full time on development, so when the development load is heavy, I tend to be a bit scarce.)
addedBill ModifiersLike politicians, legislation now has its own stats. Rather than simply being a container for a policy change that NPCs have opinions about, we're evolving bills into dynamic political entities whose success or failure will be strategic experiences unto themselves. This revolves around three key stats:
changedBill ModifiersStanding (its political health)
changedBill ModifiersMomentum (how much its Standing has changed recently – no time like the present in politics!)
changedBill ModifiersMuch of the work in this overhaul has been designing UI that conveys this information in an accessible way without being overwhelming. It's been worthwhile: we've developed a cleaner, more digestible visual style that we'll be carrying forward.
changedBill DraftingRather than a 1:1 correlation between the magnitude of a bill's proposed changes and the time it takes to draft, the drafting process will now build a bill's Quality. The more ambitious the bill, the lower its starting Quality — and the higher its Quality ceiling. Modest bills can only be so bad (or so good), while more ambitious ones can have a much wider range of outcomes.

Howdy! My last update promised more frequent updates and then... went quiet for a long time. Before we can switch into smaller, more regular updates, we needed to get a massive update done – and I didn't want to surface until I had something real to show for it. I do now, so let's get into it.

Leveling Up Legislating

Our 0.2 release will center around an entirely revamped bill lifecycle that greatly increases Political Arena's legislative drama and strategy. The two anchoring features are:

Bill Modifiers

Like politicians, legislation now has its own stats. Rather than simply being a container for a policy change that NPCs have opinions about, we're evolving bills into dynamic political entities whose success or failure will be strategic experiences unto themselves. This revolves around three key stats:

  1. Quality (how well the bill is crafted)

  2. Standing (its political health)

  3. Momentum (how much its Standing has changed recently – no time like the present in politics!)

This bill's Standing is ... not good.

These variables will have profound impact not just on a bill's fortunes and reputation, but on how both you and NPCs develop strategies for supporting — or opposing — it.

Much of the work in this overhaul has been designing UI that conveys this information in an accessible way without being overwhelming. It's been worthwhile: we've developed a cleaner, more digestible visual style that we'll be carrying forward.

Bill Drafting

Rather than a 1:1 correlation between the magnitude of a bill's proposed changes and the time it takes to draft, the drafting process will now build a bill's Quality. The more ambitious the bill, the lower its starting Quality — and the higher its Quality ceiling. Modest bills can only be so bad (or so good), while more ambitious ones can have a much wider range of outcomes.

This speed-versus-quality tension is very real-world: do you rush a bill out to be timely with the news cycle or the president's agenda, or take your time to get it right? This will also be the first appearance of our staff deployment mechanic, where assigning staff to a bill provides boosts to things like draft speed, starting Standing, and more.

Up Later: Career Mode and Campaigns

In response to player feedback, we've been working on moving up the release of career and campaign play. Having the full political experience — campaigning, legislating, and everything in between — will bring the game closer to its final vision faster than other additions would. I'll share more detail on what that looks like in upcoming updates.

You won't be limited to two years of gameplay for much longer. ---

That's it for now. If our 0.1 Early Access debut showcased the legislative simulation, then 0.2 will showcase the legislative game. I’m very amped.

More soon. — Eliot
