Sometimes, a tiny request balloons into a massive update.
@sliynk's request seemed reasonable enough, and a few other players also seemed excited. So I added a way to activate "Play Something Else" after the trick was over.
But then I needed a way to say, "actually, I don't want to activate it," so I added a skip button.
And then that skip button was annoying to press, so I added auto-skip.
And then I tried playing a run and discovered...
SO... MANY... BUGS...
...But it was 100% worth it.
Gameplay: Activating Special Abilities After the Trick
"Play Something Else" is now way more useful. And I reworked several other abilities, including "Diamonds Overload," which went from almost useless to maybe my favorite card ever!
Steam post imageThe new “Diamonds Overload” lets you convert one card in the trick to diamonds. In the example above, I could steal the trick from Wanda by turning Naomi's 10♣️ into 10♦️. Even if diamonds aren't trumps, you can convert the lead card to diamonds, making Wanda's Ace an off-suit loser.
There are SO many possibilities now!
UI: Boss Slam Abilities, Special Card Effects, and Trump/Lead Suit Clarity
I also made several UI improvements.
During the Small Slam or Grand Slam, your opponents often activate abilities that animate dramatically onto the screen. The problem was that players sometimes missed the text entirely and had no idea what just happened.
Now, those ability descriptions remain visible until the end of the trick, making it much easier to follow.
I also added the lead suit and trump suit to the card table, and updated the hover text when dragging cards to make it clearer why that card will win or lose the trick.
Gameplay: NEW Special Cards!
In addition to reworking "Play Something Else" and "Diamonds Overload," I added THREE NEW cards to the demo. You'll have to figure out how to unlock them (hint: it has to do with Wesley and Edward's Small Slam), because they won't simply appear in the shop.
I also renamed "Pip Streak" to "Pip Pip Hooray," since the "streak" part confused players into thinking you had to win multiple tricks in a row.
Thank You!
Thank you to everyone in the Overtrick Discord. A huge amount of this update came directly from your feedback, bug reports, and ideas.
Overtrick keeps getting better because of all of you.
