changedToday, we wanted to talk about one of the gameplay pillars of No More Room in Hell 2’s Early Access period: Permadeath. We received a lot of feedback from various perspectives on what really worked with our approach to Responder progression and the risks of extraction and where players wanted to see the formula evolve. With Armageddon and the game reset, it was the perfect time for us to implement a series of changes to offer more ways to experience NMRIH2 while preserving that risk.
changedSecond ChancesAs we shared in our Free Weekend Insights blog , difficulties are changing in the Armageddon update to have more emphasis on different ways to experience the apocalypse. Respawning has been expanded in stages that slowly lessen in frequency and introduce more risk of a run ending as you progress upward, allowing an easier experience for players to learn the core gameplay loop.
changedSecond ChancesPermadeath still exists on Beginner and Normal, either through your team wiping prior to a respawn point or dying after extraction has been called. Once players advance to Hard or Nightmare, permadeath as it has come to be known throughout Early Access returns and Responders are in danger from the moment they spawn in… unless they have a Rescue Beacon.
addedTo the RescueWhile a lot of NMRIH2 in the past has been designed with permadeath in mind, we wanted to add another layer of depth to the system and also allow players more choices outside of a match on how much risk they are willing to take on. This goal led us to the Rescue Beacon, our highest-end Loadout item to date and the only one purchasable through either Credits or Merits (more details on Merits here ).
addedTo the RescueA Rescue Beacon, when equipped, prevents the next instance of loss that Responder will receive. This works in any situation where permadeath is enabled so even players on Beginner may benefit if extractions prove too difficult. There are several tradeoffs, from it taking up one of your loadout slots to it being a consumable meaning it costs a lot to maintain protection on a Responder over several failed runs.
addedYour Responders, Your SurvivalAll these changes are intended to naturally push players towards our goals for the launch endgame: tackling Nightmare difficulty and curating a roster of Responders. From Survival to the new cosmetics to the adjustments to the perk pool, there are now more reasons than ever to have multiple unique Responders to tackle each challenge you face and achieve the hardest content in the game.

Here’s what it looks like when the above Responder, Molotov, dies in their next match:
Your Responders, Your Survival

Whether you’re someone who plans to tackle Nightmare on the first day or spends weeks building an arsenal in preparation, these different play options make Armageddon the most varied update to date. We hope players enjoy taking their friends through Beginner all the way to their first Nightmare Raven Rock run.
