Steam post imageIt's been seven years since we released Evolution Digital. We continue to be floored by the community that's grown around it. We've also heard your frustrations: Runaway leaders that snowball their advantage. Expansions that can't be combined. Brutal experiences if you make a mistake. This is why for the last four years we've been working on the sequel: Nature.
What’s actually changed? At first glance, the two games look pretty similar. But under the hood, we’ve rebuilt the engine to reduce "luck of the draw" frustrations, prevent runaway leaders, and make an architecture that allows for massive variety. 1. Strategy Over Luck In Evolution, like most card games, the deck could be your biggest enemy. You needed a defense, but drew 3 Predators. The Predator Deck: In Nature, predators are in a separate deck. You can choose to hunt whenever you want—not just when the cards allow it. Size Matters: In Nature, a larger animal takes more food when it eats. You've always got the option to increase Size. Card draw: In Evolution, you’ll fail to draw a defensive card once every 3 rounds. In Nature, drawing 5 from a deck of 8, those odds drop to 1 in 1,428. You win or lose because of how you played, not because you got lucky.
2. Endless Ways to Play We heard this one a lot: you wanted expansions that actually worked together. Mix & Match: Unlike Evolution, Nature modules not only combine but interact with each other. Worlds to explore: With 6 modules, you have 48 unique combinations to explore in Nature. Find your favorites, and see how Traits vary in value in each ecosystem.
3. No More Runaway Leaders Nothing feels worse than making one mistake in round two of Evolution, watching your Species get devoured, and realizing you're likely to lose the whole game. The Fairer Mechanic: In Nature, losing population hurts your score, but it doesn't cripple your future. You start the next round with resources equal to everyone else. You’ve got the chance to make it up on future rounds.
4. More Content and a Cleaner UI Challenges and Campaigns: We’ve not only built a campaign for the base game, we've made one for Jurassic, Flight, and Arctic Tundra, each with unique challenges specific to the Module. Refined UI: No more digging through nested submenus. We’ve streamlined the interface so you can spend less time clicking and more time competing.
A Note from the Team It might sound like I'm biased toward Nature. That's definitely possible. I’ll always love Evolution — it’s one of my favorite games and I'm proud to have helped develop the digital version, and we will continue to maintain it for the players who love its brutal volatility. After playing Nature though, it’s hard for me to go back. The depth and variety in Nature feel like a true leap forward. We hope you'll give it a try and let us know what you think! For a breakdown on the rule differences between Evolution and Nature, check out the blog: Evolution vs Nature Differences
