Happy Tuesday, Tough Cookies!

Today, we want to talk about someone you’ve probably already met a few times on this page: Barrington.

Barrington Bear is the heart of My Friend Barrington. While players explore the world through his perspective, he also represents something much bigger than just a playable character. Barrington is the imagined hero of eleven-year-old Jordan.

From the very beginning, we knew Barrington needed to feel comforting, familiar, and expressive in a way that instantly connects with players. That meant drawing inspiration from something many of us share: childhood toys.

When designing Barrington, we knew we wanted him to feel as familiar as possible. His design pulls from the kind of stuffed animals many people remember from childhood, with simple silhouettes, rounded proportions, and stitched details that suggest both warmth and resilience.

One small but meaningful detail is Barrington’s stitched eye. It hints that Barrington isn’t perfect, but that’s exactly what makes him feel real. Toys carry stories. They show signs of time, care, and imagination. We wanted Barrington to feel like he had lived in Jordan’s world for a long time.

Making Barrington Ours

Our creative director, Tyler, actually bought a small teddy bear from Walmart as a starting reference. But as a team, we wanted Barrington to feel special to the message of our game. That’s when we decided to replace one of his eyes with a button. We even hand-sewed Barrington’s left eye so he could stay familiar, but still feel distinct.

Beyond appearance, animation also plays a big role in bringing Barrington to life. Alex, our 3D artist responsible for implementing Barrington in the game, wanted players to feel like they were moving with their own childhood teddy bear. His movements are soft and expressive so that even simple actions like walking or jumping feel full of personality.

At the end of the day, Barrington isn’t just a character guiding the player through the world. He reflects the courage Jordan wishes he could embody.

Finding that balance between comfort, imagination, and emotional meaning has been one of the most important parts of building My Friend Barrington. And if Barrington reminds you of a toy you once had growing up, then we know we’re doing something right.

As we get closer to our release date, we’ll be sharing more gems and experiences with you along the way. The journey is just getting started...

Catch you in the next one, Tough Cookies!
