Modern Warships Game Modes: From Classic Battles to Special Operations

In Modern Warships, every battle feels different. Sometimes victory depends on tight team coordination, sometimes on individual skill, and sometimes on your ability to quickly adapt to a changing battlefield.

At launch and in future updates, players can expect both classic PvP battles and special modes with unique rules. Below is an overview of how you’ll engage in combat, capture objectives, support allies, climb the ranks, and create your own matches.

Team Battle

This is the foundation of the Modern Warships combat experience — a classic 5v5 clash.

The rules are simple but intense: eliminate the enemy team before they eliminate you, or secure an advantage before the match ends. Each battle lasts 10 minutes, and every mistake comes at a high cost.

For those who prefer not to sail alone, you’ll be able to queue in squads of up to three players.

Domination

If you enjoy not only firepower but also map control, this mode will be one of the most intense.

Two teams of 5 players fight to control three key zones: A, B, and C. Capturing begins as soon as a ship enters the zone, but if both teams are present, progress is halted. Multiple allied ships in a zone will speed up the capture.

Each team starts with 500 points. Points are lost not only by losing ships, but also through map control pressure. Each player has 3 lives, so even after being destroyed, you still have a chance to return and turn the tide of battle.

Victory goes to the team that reduces the enemy’s points to zero or completely eliminates their ability to continue fighting.

Deathmatch

Sometimes, you don’t need allies.

In this mode, everyone fights for themselves. The winner is the first to reach 10 points: 2 points are awarded for a kill, and 1 point for an assist.

The pace is fast: after being destroyed, you can respawn and continue the hunt. Each successful elimination grants useful consumables that help you survive longer and play more aggressively.

No squads, no compromises — just pure skill, reaction time, and the drive to come out on top.

Ranked Mode

For those who want not just to win, but to prove their superiority season after season, Ranked Mode will be available in Modern Warships.

Your journey begins with placement matches: a series of 10 battles that determine your starting rank. From there, you’ll climb the ranked ladder, compete for leaderboard positions, and earn seasonal rewards.

Points System:

  • Wins grant points, while losses deduct them;

  • The final number of points depends on your position on the post-match scoreboard — the more damage you deal, the more points you earn;

  • In case of a draw, the final points depend on your position on the scoreboard and the total equipment power of both teams.

Additional value comes from seasonal and battle-ranked currencies, which can be spent on useful rewards — from equipment to cosmetic items.

Only specially designated ships marked with “R” are allowed, making Ranked battles a separate competitive environment with its own rules and meta.

You’ll also be able to play in squads of up to three players.

Custom game

Want to run a training session, set up a friendly match, or organize a full-scale tournament? Custom Battles will make it possible.

Players can configure match parameters: choose maps, ship classes, tiers, battle duration, number of participants, and more. Additional rules will also be available — such as tactical consumables, restricted enemy observation, and a special tournament mode where the captain can assign team spawn points.

This is a flexible tool for the community, clans, and anyone who wants to create their own battle scenarios.

Escort

In special events, a mode will appear where success depends not only on firepower, but also on objective play.

In Escort, one team must guide AI-controlled ships along a route to their destination, while the other team must stop them at all costs. These are typically tankers, and each one becomes a key objective on the map.

The route includes checkpoints. Reaching them changes the flow of battle: the escorting team gains new spawn positions, and weapons and consumables are restored. The convoy ships themselves are not defenseless — they are equipped with their own air defense systems against certain threats.

To win, the defenders only need to escort at least one ship to port. The attackers must destroy the entire convoy.

Matches are dynamic and relentless: respawns are unlimited, meaning pressure on both sides remains constant until the very end.

Tandem Wars

Another event mode — more compact, faster-paced, and especially intense.

The match features 4 teams of 2 players. The goal is to be the first to reach 20 points or finish with the highest score. Eliminations grant 2 points, assists grant 1.

Additional depth comes from bonuses that periodically appear on the map. One container may boost speed, another can conceal you with a smoke screen, and a third restores part of your ship’s durability. Success here depends not only on combat and maneuvering, but also on map control.

Air Combat

For fans of carrier aviation and naval air tactics, a dedicated mode is in development where aircraft carriers take center stage.

Two teams of 3 players start with equal points. Points are lost when aircraft and ships are destroyed, with the loss of a carrier dealing especially heavy damage to the team’s score.

Victory can be achieved in two ways: deplete the enemy’s points entirely or destroy all of their ships. Success in this mode depends on effective aircraft management, well-timed sorties, and the ability to defend your fleet from aerial attacks.

More Than One Way to Wage War

Modern Warships is set to offer not just a single battle scenario, but a full system of modes tailored to different playstyles. Prefer fair team clashes? Jump into Team Battle. Enjoy map control? Choose Domination. Want to test yourself solo? Try Free-for-All. And if you’re into rankings, tournaments, and structured competitive play — there’s a mode for that too.

And this is only part of what awaits players in future naval battles.

Add Modern Warships to your Steam wishlist — more details about ships, maps, and next-generation naval combat are coming soon.
