Development Update (2025.11.26)

I want to comment on why there has not been a release since 2025.03.23. While I have started working on a new game, I have not forgotten about this one, and I am not 100% happy with its current state.

addedAs I started working on prototypes of new games and worked on fixing defects for Kung Pao Banqi, I grew dissatisfied with the Godot game engine. Godot is great for what it is. It is quick to learn, has an easy-to-use interface, and a good community.
changedThe updated version of Kung Pao Banqi will have a smaller installation, dropping from ~250 MB to 75 MB or less. It'll also have drag-and-drop support in addition to the click-based movement that is currently implemented. It is also built for cross-platform support from the ground up. I plan on releasing native macOS and Linux versions.

I want to comment on why there has not been a release since 2025.03.23. While I have started working on a new game, I have not forgotten about this one, and I am not 100% happy with its current state.

As I started working on prototypes of new games and worked on fixing defects for Kung Pao Banqi, I grew dissatisfied with the Godot game engine. Godot is great for what it is. It is quick to learn, has an easy-to-use interface, and a good community.

However, Godot (and other engines such as Unity or Unreal Engine) contain a lot of bloat. They contain a lot of features I will never use. This causes the distributable to be larger, and the code is more difficult to debug.

I created a custom game engine called Popcorning Guinea Pig, and over the last couple of months I have been working to port Kung Pao Banqi from Godot to Popcorning Guinea Pig.

The updated version of Kung Pao Banqi will have a smaller installation, dropping from ~250 MB to 75 MB or less. It'll also have drag-and-drop support in addition to the click-based movement that is currently implemented. It is also built for cross-platform support from the ground up. I plan on releasing native macOS and Linux versions.

Watch for the updated version in the coming months.

Once the new version is released, there are additional enhancements I plan on adding.

Kung Pao Banqi is my first commercially released game. Thank you to everyone who has purchased and tried it.
