Repeated intro

Hey, Steam! This is the first milestone since I've published the Steam Page! How exciting! It's been a really busy month for me. First and foremost, I had some family come visit from out-of-town, which meant almost 10 days with no dev! This was a first for me since beginning work on Kinfolk last October, and it was nice to take a break. I hit the ground running once I got back though. The Steam page got published (let me know what you think!) and I locked in a composer for the OST, and the pixel artist that does all of the big pieces for the game came in hot with several new tilesets and set pieces for the game, which resulted in a huge facelift for the village. Steam post imageDown in the code dungeon, I was hard at work getting some of the last systems implemented for the demo version. The core of Kinfolk is the cards that are dealt at the beginning of each round. These cards are your objectives for the day, and represent the day to day activities of a peasant in the early medieval period. Players are tasked with doing fun and exciting things, like fulfilling weapons orders for the king, collecting waste from chamberpots, or stocking up your stores of food for the winter. All of the cards for the demo version have been finalized and implemented into the game. This brings a close to the core game loop, and serves as the backdrop of activity that the ever evolving chaos of the game is set against. This was a huge milestone, because it leaves only one system left for me to finish developing for the demo! Steam post imageI finished up the Guard's mechanics by implementing a wrestling mechanic and adding in restraints, which is a pretty nifty system. Piggybacking off of the "Grab and Pull" mechanic which was originally inspired by Link to the Past, the Wrestling mechanic comes into effect when one player grabs onto another. When this happens, they can move the other player around, and if they move them around enough, then the target will end up being knocked to the ground and stunned for a moment. The magic happens when two players are grabbing onto each other, both pushing and shoving for dominance in the match. This also adds another layer to player combat, as it can be employed while holding items, resulting in some interesting strategies in a melee. Once a player has been wrestled to the ground its the assailants opportunity to restrain their victim by tying them up with a rope. Once a player has been tied up, they can be cut loose by another player, or they can be dragged over to the stocks and placed there, where they will remain until a player decides to set them free. It's a really nifty mechanic! Another really awesome new addition recently is the Quern (an old-timey word for a millstone). The Quern is used to grind wheat down into flour, which is a lot more fun in Kinfolk than it sounds. Once wheat has been grown and harvested, it can be put onto the Quern and the lever can be pushed by a player to begin grinding. As wheat (or anything else!) is processed on the quern, it moves towards the center, at which point it's ground down. If you've got a bucket placed at the base of the quern then it will collect the flour, which can then be used to bake delicious bread! But you can grind more than just flour. Anything placed on the quern will end up being processed, and a lot of things are dangerous to grind up. Any rocks will violently break apart as they're crushed down, tools can jam the quern and can end up being launched in any direction. Worst of all is if a rather clumsy Kin manages to find their way on the quern, they can face dire consequences, as they are slowly crushed and ground to bits! Oh my! Steam post imageKinfolk is a Cozy place. But it can also be a dangerous place. If you'd like to follow along with daily updates, head over to the Discord Server (https://discord.gg/3324YrD7U3)! Version 0.18 Release Notes

Servers

  • Added a "Join Test Server" button that will connect directly to my test server if it's being hosted (Mondays!)

  • Fixed a few issues related to connecting to servers

  • Added additional messaging when there is an issue connecting to servers and populating the server listing screen

Localization

  • Several areas of the game were missing localization tags, and were therefore not translating to other languages

Mechanics

  • Added in Rain barrels outside each building, which spawn full of water and can be refilled from the well

  • Added in a Quern to the farm area, which can be used to grind wheat into flour. If you put anything else on it, results may vary (and be dangerous!)

  • Made the bounding box for mushrooms smaller so they are harder to squish!

  • Added in Berms and Lofts, both of which are vertical areas which can be fallen from, and will result in a fracture

  • Jumping or falling from too high up will cause the character pain (Red Screen Flash, no negative effects). If it's way too high, it will result in a fracture.

  • Everything in the game now has a mass, which affects several aspects of gameplay such as movement speed, pulling speed, and throwing distance

  • Running into props, heavy items and walls will now stun the player for a half second. Tripping over heavy items will also drop your items from your hands. Be Careful!

  • Added in a "Wrestling" mechanic. Players can now grab each other and attempt to push the other to the ground

  • Added in a Rope which can be used to restrain players when they are prone or laying down

  • Added stocks, which restrained players can be placed in and require another player to free you from

  • Approaching the edge of the map (which is covered in fog) will induce Anxiety, which slows the players movement. Moving ever farther into the fog will halt the player from proceeding further.

  • Different types of terrain and flooring now have different rates of catching fire and burning

  • Most status effects now have an impact on gameplay, such as action speed and movement speed

  • All cards in the game can now be completed (success or failure) and the game will tally them after each round and display a.. relevant.. message to the player

  • If the player has been on the title screen too long without opening the book, the game prompts them to press any key

  • The main menu can be activated now by pressing a key on the keyboard, as well as the old Clicking on the Book mechanic

  • The baking process has been added in and finalized, and there are a variety of bread products that can be produced

  • Added a Controls listing to the Settings menu

Audio / Visual

  • Added a new particle effect to crops to more accurately convey when they're growing

  • Fixed the offsets for crops while they're growing

  • Vessels now visually reflect how full they are

  • Updated the pixel art for mushrooms

  • Added in some shorter grass, used extensively!

  • Added in a toggleable widget to display common controls on-screen

  • The "drop indicator" has been given a facelift to be more intuitive and now displays a "drop preview"

  • Updated the Engine logo

The Town

  • Did a big update to the artwork around the village

  • Added in several new interior and exterior tilesets to add some more variety and polish to the town

  • Began painting foliage and finalizing the map

  • Added in 2 new types of fencing (wooden and stone)

  • Added in a Berm and Loft, both of which can be fallen down (see mechanics)

  • Moved the forge and most of the smithy outside

  • Shuffled around the farm area to include the Quern (see mechanics)

  • Added a lot more dishware to each building

  • Added some starting food to each building

  • Beds all now have pillows (pillow fight, anyone?)

  • Added a new tree (Ash) with its own type of wood (mechanically, all wood is the same)

  • Added a new vessel (buckets, which have the same volume as cauldrons, 4 Litres)

  • Added in flowers, which can be picked and eaten

  • Added in rocks, which can be picked up and thrown
