And while we’re here, I’d like to take the opportunity to share some interesting facts about HMUR with you.

A Play of Contrasts in HMUR

I want to talk about an artistic technique that has been present in HMUR since the very first days of development — the PLAY OF CONTRASTS.

The core idea behind this technique is that moving from one location to another creates a sharp contrast and a sense of surprise. I’ve loved this approach since childhood — in the cartoons I watched, characters were often thrown into completely different environments. The greater the difference between these settings, the more it fascinated me.

The first attempts to use visual contrasts in HMUR were a bit clumsy, but most of them — heavily reworked — have survived to this day.

Let’s look at one of the early examples — The Gallery.

Once, I was working on a very dark level — an abandoned laboratory with rusty walls, red mushrooms scattered around, and red dust floating in the air. Working on this area was tough; such gloomy environments aren’t really my thing. At some point, I thought: what if there were a secret room on this level — a gallery with paintings and pink walls? The contrast would be striking and could genuinely surprise the player. Creating that gallery brought me much more joy than designing the dark level itself — and it survived to this day. At the moment, it’s still one of my favorite places, and it continues to contrast sharply with the industrial areas around it.

In the earliest version of HMUR, such contrasting spaces mostly existed as secret rooms. Now, however, they have grown into full-fledged levels successfully integrated into the game’s universe. Those who played the playtest version may have noticed that these are now test environments where any type of space can be recreated — including that same Gallery.
