Dev Chat: A Look At the Character Models

One of the coolest parts of reviving a game IP that came out in 1998 is seeing the character models get a modern makeover all around. I asked our artists about the direction they took in this endeavor.

changedThe characters are defined by their bold hairstyles and anime-inspired outfits that emphasize each individual's personality. We also made a conscious effort to give every character a certain sharpness to their overall look.
addedThe world of HARD EDGE is all about these uniquely styled characters coming to life in a cyber-futuristic setting, so we designed this new installment to capture and preserve that same appeal.
addedI'd say they got it down perfect! The new models have a wonderful sense of continuity. It gives me a unique sense of nostalgia, as though someone simply paused the game, turned up the resolution, and pressed play again, although these characters had actually been untouched for more than 20 years.

We aimed to preserve the charm of the original's distinctive 1990s character designs while ensuring they would feel natural and believable as 3D models.

Also, hair and curves!

With the evolution in texture resolution for game models since the days of the first PlayStation, we can finally portray some of the more finer details of the character designs they couldn't for the original game. Our lead 3D artist says this especially shines in the hair and the body curves.

Big spiky hair is a important aspect of the Hard Edge 90's anime look.

Here's our spikiest guys to demonstrate.

Exaggerated muscles and curves are also part of the look.

These guys have probably never missed a day at the gym.

That's it for today, but more talk about the development of the game coming soon.

Until next time!👋
