Hey yo, people,

We just wanted to say a huge thanks to everybody who has played the game. We’re super happy to have hit a new CCU peak, and we’re really grateful for all the awesome reviews and all the new players who got to experience our universe for the first time.

That said, we decided to share something cool with you all today as a token of gratitude. Hopefully, you'll find these interesting and obscure facts we've collected fascinating.

⚠️ IMPORTANT: Facts that can spoil the story for those who haven't beaten the game yet are marked as spoilers → (like this.) If you haven't progressed the story much yet, we suggest you avoid reading them.

GENERAL GAME FACTS

🎮 Happy’s Humble Burger Barn, the prototype version of Happy's Humble Burger Farm, actually started as a first-person car combat game blending Goldeneye with Twisted Metal. How did that wind up as a cooking game? Kaleb, the lead programmer, took the car mechanics and applied them to a drive-thru designed by Blake. When asked to come up with a horror twist that wasn’t just the tired “evil mascot” trope, Jon suggested the whole thing is a

government simulation

.

🎮 Every item needed for each recipe can be found for free throughout the world.

🎮 An abandoned intro scene still exists in the game files, depicting the main character getting into a car accident before waking up on the operating table. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XKnGlOhlhc 🎮 At one point, players would have had to spend some of the money they earned at work on rent money. One of the unused rooms in the apartment building would have featured the landlord “Armpit,” Toe’s older brother. This was abandoned.

🎮 An early concept for a potential DLC was a game starring Toe before his significant mental decline, working in a “Happy’s Humble Bowling Barn” simulation.

🎮 There was almost an Easter egg in which players could use the “chip burner” helmet on Toe, but it would have fried his brain, ultimately killing him.

🎮

Originally, the furnace room was supposed to be the final escape route. Players would need to find Golden, Silver, and Bronze burgers to melt in the smelter to open the door, leading to the final sewer escape sequence.

🎮

An early narrative concept was the main character being E7’s father, searching for his son on the island. This was later abandoned in favor of an investigative journalist looking for one of his co-workers.

🎮

The final escape sequence through the sewer was designed with the intention of featuring all 4 Barnyard Buds. Asset Samuel would be swimming in the sewer waters, Asset Chuck would be giving chase, and players would have to once again overfeed a bandaged Asset Peter. Additionally, they would need to be crafting Burger Bombs and Keycard Hackers on the fly while dodging these antagonists. The only remnants of this concept are Asset Joy popping up throughout the segment.

🎮

An earlier concept of the game was players intentionally sabotaging the Paragon facility from within to take them down. This still exists in spirit, as the boss fight with Asset Chuck ultimately leads to the simulation glitching out and shutting down.

FACTS FOR THE LORE HOUNDS

📖 The story of Happy’s Humble Burger Farm could be jokingly summarized as “McDonald’s meets MK Ultra!”

📖 The game takes place within the Scythe Saga Universe, a multimedia experience spanning concept albums, synthwave compilations, and numerous games.

📖 The Scythe Saga Universe started as an unreleased 20-song rock opera called “Apocalyptic Dawn.” It was set in the distant future of the current timeline depicted in the games.

📖 JJ and the Jazzy Javas, the band playing in the coffee shop, is randomized loops played intentionally off-time and off-key to simulate an AI band struggling to hold a tune.

📖 Several long-form lore breakdowns have emerged on YouTube. Many of the conclusions these YouTubers draw are incredibly accurate! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHQxhaOWv6I 📖

Despite killing numerous Paragon employees and scientists, Asset Joy used E7 and E42 as her pawns instead, monitoring them and utilizing their own attempts at escape to facilitate her own escape.

MUSIC/SOUND FACTS

🎵 The “ Happy the Humble Heifer ” song features the singing of Jason Paige. Jason, a renowned vocalist, was chosen for his iconic singing on the Pokémon theme. When describing the project, composer Jon told him the team were looking for “Pokémon meets Meat Loaf’s Bat Out Of Hell.” Jason had also done backing vocals on Bat Out Of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose, and was the perfect fit.

🎙️ The Barnyard Buds were all played by notable voice acting alumni. Happy the Humble Heifer was played by Lani Minella, a voice actress known for characters such as Bubsy, all the way to the screams of the zombies in The Last of Us.
