Graveyard Keeper 2 changes
Hello, Keepers!
The legend of The Town is something every Graveyard Keeper has likely heard before. Some of you may have even tried to enter. In today’s devlog, you’ll finally get a glimpse into the place shrouded in mystery.
First Appearance.
From your very first day as Graveyard Keeper, there were rumours and hints of The Town’s colourful backstory, but nobody could ever give many details.
You’d see the gate, heavily guarded, and strive for the precious Town Pass…only for misfortune to befall you when you were so close, leading you to question if there really was a Town in the world of Graveyard Keeper, or if it was just a phantom, a joke, a lie… a sweet cake for the fellow players.
Today, though, we can finally confirm: not only will you be able to see The Town in Graveyard Keeper 2, you’ll be able to restore it, too.
Town History.
This is not The Town in its glory days; many centuries have passed since it was founded during the era of the Old Mighty God.
Back then, the Old God provided people with everything they needed, leaving them plenty of time to build a beautiful ancient city. Throughout the Town, you’ll still catch glimpses of that long-lost grandeur hidden beneath layers of a later medieval settlement built on top of it.
But even that medieval place has been eroded.
The Town lies nearly abandoned, and you – the Graveyard Keeper (aka Lord Inquisitor) are the last person capable of saving it, rebuilding it, and leading it into a new era of prosperity.
What's happened?
We won’t tell you exactly what happened because…spoilers.
What we can say is that most of the Town has been overrun by townsfolk who turned into undead zombies. Your job is to reclaim the city district by district.
Later, however, you’ll discover that zombies are not actually the Town’s biggest problem. With proper defenses, people can live alongside them just fine. In fact, zombies may even become a local tourist attraction. The real problem is much worse: hopelessness… and a lack of consumer goods.
After reclaiming an area, you’ll need to bring it back to life. Restore comfortable housing, reopen cafés and shops, and rebuild local infrastructure. At any time, you’ll be able to choose from several buildings and businesses to restore.
Those choices matter.
Buildings won’t just improve The Town itself. They’ll also create new markets for your goods and unlock valuable products and resources for you to buy.
Keeping an entire Town running is no small task, but the Keeper is exactly the kind of fellow who can handle it. If a middle-aged man can somehow provide for a family, why not provide for an entire city? Especially in a fairy tale.
And of course, as the Graveyard Keeper, your duty will still include burying townsfolk who reach the end of their journey.
The larger The Town grows, the more corpses you’ll receive. The better supplied and more prosperous (and therefore sinful) The Town becomes, the better the corpses will be too. Each corpse will have more skulls.
The Best Part of Every Town
You may ask:
“What about the Graveyard?”
And the answer is simple:
“Of course we’ll have one.“
The Graveyard will be located in a peaceful and beautiful area outside the city walls, near the Keeper’s base. Restoring the Town is one thing, but we’re not monsters…we’re not going to force you to live inside it.
While the core idea behind the Graveyard remains the same, we’ve added a new layer of graveyard management.
Through the Tech Tree, you’ll unlock unique special Graveyard modules that can be placed at graveyards. Each module provides space for different useful objects such as, tombs, benches, columbaries, monuments and last but not least – graves!
We’re also adding many new grave designs and decorations so you can make your graveyard truly unique.
Fun Parallels
The Town in the Graveyard Keeper world feels like a living organism with its own history.
In the Game of Crone DLC, you saw its ancient streets. During the events of Graveyard Keeper 1, it was still a functioning medieval city somewhere beyond the horizon.
Now, in Graveyard Keeper 2, The Town enters a new era: the era of Zombie Capitalism.
Much like Europe after the Great Plague entered the Renaissance, the town is now stepping into an age of restoration, mass production, and mass consumption.
Even long after the story of Graveyard Keeper 2 ends, The Town will continue to exist and evolve on its own.
That’s it for today!
