Frontier: Path of Shadows changes
The Centaur Corporation Union is the most technologically advanced power in the Oecumene and the homeland of Alice, one of the first companions you'll meet during your journey across the Frontier. To better understand the person who will accompany you through the fringes of known space, it's worth taking a closer look at the society that shaped her.
A Nation Ruled by Corporations
The Centaur Corporation Union is a state built around humanity's largest corporations. They provide security, drive scientific progress, manage the economy, and define the nation's political direction.
In Centaur, pragmatism always comes before idealism. This mindset is what shaped Alice. She understands the Frontier's economy, knows the true value of things, and can quickly tell whether a deal is worth taking—or whether someone is trying to cheat you. During your journey, she often becomes the voice of reason.
The Team Comes Before the Hero
Despite its demanding corporate culture, people in Centaur rarely succeed alone. Every major project is a collective effort, with each team member responsible for their part of the whole.
That's why Alice sees her crew as people she can trust with her life. She naturally takes on the role of a mentor, someone with a better understanding of the world beyond the station, helping the crew make difficult decisions and keeping everyone united when things begin to fall apart.
Life in a High-Tech Society
Most Centaurians live in sprawling megacities where digital services, automation, and neural interfaces have become so commonplace that they're no longer perceived as technology at all. Homes continuously monitor their owners' health, personal AIs manage everyday schedules, and robotic industrial complexes handle production.
The gap between the corporate elite and the residents of the lower levels of these megacities remains significant. Even so, Centaur is far removed from the classic cyberpunk dystopia. Corporations understand that an educated, healthy, and motivated employee is far more valuable than someone with nothing left to lose. As a result, the standard of living remains among the highest in the Inner Sphere.
Alice learned that lesson well. If negotiating with smugglers is more profitable than fighting them, she'll recommend diplomacy. If pirates are willing to honor the terms of a deal, she'll see little reason to resort to violence before every other option has been exhausted.
A Culture of Self-Improvement
The core value of Centaurian society is continuous improvement. Engineers, scientists, and highly skilled professionals are held in the highest regard, while personal achievement matters far more than family background or a famous surname.
Implants have long since ceased to be luxury items. They are considered a natural extension of the human body. True sophistication isn't measured by how expensive your augmentations are, but by how seamlessly they integrate. The more advanced the technology, the less noticeable it should be.
The Centaur Corporation Union remains one of the most influential powers in the Oecumene. And Alice is a perfect example of the people this society produces: pragmatic, team-oriented, technically proficient, and always ready to find a solution where others see only problems.
