Foxy Dumplings changes
If you read our "Why These Dumplings?" post, you might've noticed one line we dropped without much explanation:
"Cho Muang - we genuinely could not believe this recipe existed when we first found it. It ended up inspiring an entirely new game mechanic."
A few of you asked what that actually meant. Fair - we were vague on purpose, because honestly, we didn't expect it to become a whole story. But it did, so here it is.
First, the recipe
If you've never seen Cho Muang: it's a Thai dumpling, steamed, shaped by hand into a little flower, and it's purple. Not food-coloring purple. The dough gets its color from butterfly pea flowers steeped in water. That's it. You take a flower, you make tea out of it, you knead the tea into the dough, and suddenly you have a dumpling that looks like it grew in a garden.
When we found this, the conversation in our team chat went roughly: "wait, the color is an ingredient?" And then someone said the sentence that cost us three weeks of planning: "so technically any flower could be a dye."
What we did with that
Here's the mechanic that came out of it.
After you finish the main story, every city you've cooked your way through gets a signature flower. Some of them you'll recognize from the story itself, some are new. Find the flower, and you can brew it into a dye. The dye goes into your dough.
That's the loop. It sounds small written down, but it changes what the endgame is for. The main story is about proving yourself in each city. The dye hunt is about going back to those cities with different eyes, because now you're not looking for customers or ingredients - you're looking for something growing in an alley behind the market you've walked past forty times.
We tried a few versions where dyes changed stats. Purple dough gives +2 to whatever. It felt wrong immediately. The dyes don't make your dumplings better. They make them yours.
Which brings us to Foxtagram
If you've been following these devlogs, you knew this was coming.
Colored dough is, frankly, a Foxtagram cheat code. A plate of pale dumplings is a nice photo. A plate with colorful wrappers is a post. Your followers will react to color combinations, and certain color moods will trend, the same way recipes trend now.
Where it stands
Being honest about the state of things: the dye system is in progress. We planned all the flowers for the basic 12 cities. The system won't be available in the demo, but we will think about inviting some willing souls to play around with it. If you have opinions, the comments are open - we do read them.
Concept art for the city flowers is coming in a future post once more of them are locked in. There's one we're especially attached to, but naming it would spoil a story location, so it stays in the drawer for now.
Funny thing about all this: we went looking for one recipe and came back with an endgame. That keeps happening with this project. At some point we should probably stop being surprised.
Until next time, keep your steamers hot.
