Feryl is a small experimental creature simulation built by Double Star Games.

Inside a glass habitat lives a tiny autonomous intelligence powered by a rhythmic oscillator network coupled with a tiny 8-bit integer neural net. The entire AI system is only about 70 KB, yet it allows Feryl to explore, react, vocalize, and even learn to play simple games like tic-tac-toe.

This project grew out of something we’ve been thinking about for a long time:

extremely small, autonomous intelligences running locally inside game worlds.

Feryl is the first step in that direction — more a digital terrarium than a traditional game.

Recent additions include:

  • Feryl learning to play tic-tac-toe

  • Subtitles for Feryl’s developing speech

  • Export/import codes for sharing your Feryl

Development is ongoing as we expand the enclosure and experiment with new environments.

Feryl will not stay inside the glass forever.

If the idea intrigues you, consider adding Feryl to your wishlist. It helps small experimental projects like this reach players who enjoy unusual games.

Thanks for taking a look — and welcome to the terrarium.
