DEV DIARY #7: The sounds of Escape Tales: The Awakening

Music-wise, we really wanted the main theme for Escape Tales: The Awakening to convey what the protagonist may feel in the story but also incorporate the dark and mysterious feeling of the game.

What changed

0 fixes1 addition4 changes0 removals
  • UI and audio
  • Gameplay
changedThe gameplay music is not supposed to keep you distracted, yet focused on solving puzzles. 🔐 This was one of the challenges for Adam (our sound designer), as he loves writing catchy, melodic music, yet it wouldn’t work in this case. Adam had to sort of minimize the sound palette but make it meaningful and memorable at the same time.
changedWhat's important for us in this project is to make the sound effects feel vintage and kind of lonely. Items you can notice and interact with in each level are supposed to sound as if they were coming from that space. 🔑 They were treated with tools that help you imagine if you actually dropped or moved something in that particular room.
changedWe wanted you to feel every inch of the particular location you discover with these sounds. 🎶 Sound effects for all the items in the game are supposed to enhance the feeling, that you are collecting tools needed for progressing in the game. Every card is important and their sound assets are there to emphasize that.
changedThanks for taking this trip amongst sounds with us. We hope you’re as thrilled as we are to see and hear everything in the final form! 🤩
addedPPS. In the meantime, don’t forget to Add the game to your Wishlist and Follow it to stay up to date. 😏

Music-wise, we really wanted the main theme for Escape Tales: The Awakening to convey what the protagonist may feel in the story but also incorporate the dark and mysterious feeling of the game. 🎵 For the music you'll hear in further levels while solving puzzles, we took a different approach - to keep it atmospheric and uneasy yet not that engaging.

To not be groundless, grab a sneak peak of some of the music you can already hear in the demo, and some more. 👀 Let us know what you think of it!

--- PS Each room you’ll find yourself in throughout the game has its own music theme. One of the tracks even has a little musical puzzle in it. Can you guess which one? 🧐
