Embers of the Uncrowned changes
To kick things off, we'd like to introduce "Bella," the formidable presence you will encounter early in your journey.
The First Boss Who Marks the Beginning of the Chronicle
For the game's opening, we needed a powerful device that would draw players deeply into the story. Bella was forged specifically for that purpose. Our goal with Bella was to center "vengeance" as your motivation, making her not just an obstacle but a vivid, lasting memory.
To achieve this, we focused on the juxtaposition of beauty and cruelty, creating a villain whose elegance makes her cruelty all the more unforgettable.
We wanted Bella to come across as a multidimensional first enemy—threatening, yet alluring.
Design Process
To weave beautyand cruelty into a single character, we wanted to give her cruelty a sense of inevitability, and found the answer in the instinctive desires for survival and beauty.
Bella, once a being with a withering body, absorbed the life force of a human by chance and reclaimed the alluring physique she had long coveted. The ecstasy she felt in that moment transformed her into a bloodthirsty maniac obsessed with blood and massacre.
For Bella, maintaining her beauty and committing slaughter are now one and the same. This twisted corruption is her hallmark, setting her apart from any other elf you will encounter.
We also wished to highlight her duality by giving her an obsession with blood while regarding anything but silver as impure. Every drop of blood or water that touches her fingertips transmutes into chilling "silver blood," a concept that flows through her entire visual design.
The initial design for Bella's silver blood included two versions: a bodysuit and a dress.
However the dress limited Bella's mobility and did not convey the concept of silver blood effectively enough, so we chose to further develop her suit in various ways.
We established Bella's visual identity by unifying every element in a striking silver. Her bodysuit is formed from absorbed blood that wraps around her like metallic veins, perfectly complementing her weapon and the ornate crown that symbolizes her authority.
We later finalized the design with mercury-like liquid metal flowing up from the ground, over her body, and forming a crown above her head.
Bella: Combat Design
Piercing Droplet
During internal testing, we felt the need for even more dynamic movement in her moveset. We added "Silver Waltz," where Bella glides across the battlefield like a dancer.
By having her transition from graceful movement into a sudden, sharp dash that pierces and slashes, we aimed to create a sense of tension that demands an instant reaction from the player.
Silver Waltz
Our next goal was to incorporate Bella's obsession with turning everything into silver into her combat design. We wanted every attack to be felt like purifying the world into silver, conveying a sense of mounting pressure as her corrosive silver blood slowly encroaches upon the entire battlefield.
The corrosive effect applies not only to the environment but also to the player when hit, offering an immersive experience of being slowly consumed by Bella's silver world.
Wave of Purification
Bella's inherent cruelty is most vividly displayed in her signature skill, Corpse Flower.
Blooming from the "Death Mire," the Corpse Flowers are formed by the grotesque clustering of human remains to highlight her twisted personality.
Steam post imagePlayers will find themselves under dual pressure, forced to dodge Bella's direct strikes while simultaneously evading these horrific blooms rising from beneath their feet.
All system names are temporary and subject to change.
Today we shared the story of Bella, the first boss of Embers of the Uncrowned.
For your battle against Bella in this demo, our priority was to create a fight that helps you learn and enjoy the game's core combat systems.
When you face her again in the future, she will reveal her true power and deliver a battle on a completely different level. You can find more information about Embers of the Uncrowned on our Steam page and official social media channels. (Discord / Twitter)
Adding the game to your wishlist on Steam and following us on social media mean a lot to us.
